Been using on a 9600k for the past year and its done me well tbh. I always intended on keeping it for longer but seeing all the new hardware being released and having upgraded to a 3090 from a 2080 i feel i need to balance the system out abit as well ease the upgrade itch.

I primarily play games, sims, etc with the odd photoshop and lightroom.

Is upgrading to a 5800/5900x or a 10850/900k worth it and would it even benefit any sort of gaming improvement?

This past year has seen all competing companies smash out new hardware non stop where as before it would be a good few years between releases so you get plenty of use before even thinking about upgrading. The new tech also sounds a lot better and better IPC gains in most instances especially on AMD's side.

What do you think?

personaly i wouldnt bother. i would wait atleast 6-9 months.

what monitor do you have? not something else to upgrade?
1440p 144hz 34" ultrawide, getting decent fps but i don't feel the need to up this anymore as its abit of a sweet spot for me at the moment.

Are you getting CPU bound with your current system on modern multi-core games, or GPU bound?

If the former, then upgrade your CPU.

If the latter, with a 3090, wait for Hoppit and keep your CPU.

More cpu bound for sure, there are a few games like total war series that will near max out the cpu but leave the gpu trailing abit but i know thats a more cpu bound game. Usually see around 75-80% utilisation on the cpu side of things. Saying that though i wouldn't say the gpu is being bottlenecked but i do feel it could be better utilised still if that makes sense?

It's one of those things where you've spent a lot on a system and just want to make sure its being used to its full potential.

If I got CPU bound in even one modern game that I play, I'd be getting a new CPU.

In fact, that's what made me upgrade from my old Q6600 @ 3.6, it got maxed out at 100% in Dying Light and I upgraded to my current X5650 @ 4.4 which currently makes mincemeat out of any current multi-cored game I play, at 3440x1440.

Sounds like you need a 5600X or better.

Yeah I've got a 27" 1440p 165hz. My next upgrade with be a GPU (probably a 3080) then to a larger screen but the same res.

I would still wait a while.for the CPU. Your just upgrading for the sake of it really. But if you waited until the next gen of motherboards come out, it will be more worth while, if you did upgrade.

Check the GPU usage in something like MSI Afterburner or HWinfo, that way you'll know how much graphics performance is being left unused.

It'll be quite interesting to see what results you get.

If your cpu bound you need to be playing at max setting in game to load up the gpu.

At 1440p there is no reason to be cpu bound

I'm assuming you have over clocked the poo out of your chip.

It looks like AMD are set to take over PC gaming so I think it’s safe to say the 5000 will be a lot faster Intel. If it worth moving systems is another question. My hunch is a 5800X and 6900XT will be the highest performing system.

If I were in your position I wouldn't buy in to AM4 at this stage, I'd sit tight and try to pick up a 9700k/9900k as cheap as possible if you need to upgrade. Either that or a second hand Zen 2 cpu/mobo, but only if that would better/equal performing and/or cheaper than the drop in cpu route.

what games are you being CPU bound @ 1440P with 3090 and with 144Hz monitor?

I think you are being monitor bound more like as opposed to CPU bound.

4790k here. Getting a 3070 soon hopefully. May go Zen3 too but not desperate.

Funny reading all these CPU upgrade threads.

I was like should I get a 5820k...nah. 6700k? nah 7700k? nah. 8700k...maybe but nah. Then I realised I didn't need to upgrade.

Your CPU will always botleneck your GPU or vice versa.

If you like the idea of more frames in total war then work out how much they will cost and make that decision.
