I'm going to be going to a sixth form college, starting in september, and I've chosen to do Maths, Physics and Goverment and Politics. But for maths there are loads of different sections:

Maths - Pure & Mechanics
Maths - Pure & Statistics
Maths - Pure & Decision
Statistics
Further Mathematics (with Maths)

I'm not sure which to take but i'm thinking Pure & Mechanics or Further Maths. I've heard that Mechanics goes hand in hand with Physics but I'm not entirely sure.

I'm planning to go into the RAF to train as a pilot after college (possibly university) so I'd prefer my subjects to be revolved around that.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It looks like Mechanics is involved in Further

Pure and Further maths will be very difficult. Lots to learn in a very short space of time, just incase you weren't aware. If you are a natural mathematician then I'm sure you will be fine.

How natural do you have to be? :p

For the normal 'Pure + Mech' course, not very at all, anyone can do it with a bit of effort.

Further, you'll struggle if you don't have a natural talent for it. If at GCSE, you can get an A* with minimal revision effort and time to spare in the exam, then you'll be grand. :p

Well I get A's with going to every single revision class possible, but I do that anyway just to make sure. So I guess I should stick to mechanics? :p

From your opinions I'm going to do Mechanics :)

The RAF have already asked me what I plan to do and they prefer Maths and Physics over anything, but not a specific math.

Just need to wait until April, get my Sponsorship then into college :)

Thanks for your help.

I think i'm going to have to speak to my current maths teacher and email the women from college about it, hopefully they can point me in the best direction given they know me.

The wierd thing about training to be an pilot is that you need 2 A levels. 2 A-Levels in anything, you could go in with history and spanish if you wanted :o

For this GCSE there are 3 exams and 2 pieces of coursework. I've done two exams and got A's in both and had A's in all my coursework also. The final exam is in a few weeks I think. Currently i'm at an A but it all lies on the final exam.

Indeed, GCSE grades dont really offer real indication of A-levle grades. I remember at college us being told that A grade GCSE students would be predicted C at a-level, well hows that one work, no1 gets above a C?
Anyways I got a B, so i was predicted D/E at a-level maths, after having attendance low enough to be kicked out of college(45% at one point, ended up being about 60% for the year) and doing about .. 2 homeworks(it was set weekly) i got a good old C :)

Was that with Further or?
