Right im going to Norway for a week at the end of March and will be doing 3 days at a skiiing resort (but not skiing every day etc maybe one or two have other activities such as dog sledding!). Have never been before but am getting a few lessons on a dry slope to get my balance.

Ski's, helmet etc are all rentable but I need to get myself a jacket and trousers. Temps will be about 1-5c maybe slightly warmer (end of season).

I don't want to spend a great deal but also dont want to be drenched. I've seen jackets ranging from £50 to £500. And clueless about trousers. Anyone know any decent enough cheap jacket/trousers? Or cheap ones to particularly avoid?

Any help appreciated.

I made do with cheap jacket and trousers years back on my 1st couple of ski trips but after coming into some money I spent £200 on a Nike ACG Jacket and while skiing in canada I brought some North Face trousers. Outlay has been well worth while as they are both still going strong over 10 years later and keep me a lot warmer when needed than the cheap stuff.

So if you enjoy your trip and plan to keep heading back on the slopes year on year then go get some quality gear.

If its a one off trip don't spend more than 50 quid on a jacket and less on trousers.
End of season places have loads of sales.
Check out highstreet shops too like decathlon. They have a load of low end gear for peanuts. It will do yyou for 3 days... Just wear an extra t shirt if you are cold.

I ski 2 times a year mid season. My coat was 50 pounds (reduced from 150) from Mountain Warehouse, and my trousers were 20 pounds from TkMaxx (a Tresspass pair). I've been using these for 4 years with no issues so far, never get cold or wet, only just got back from a week in Cham where it was a 24/7 blizzard and I was fine.

Gloves though. Get a good pair of gloves - although cheap, Nevica ones have done me well for years. If you have cold hands you just won't have fun.

Worth looking at Animal outlet on ebay, upto 70% off

Dare2b sale is on also, I quite highly rate the top end dare2b stuff its got pretty much all the tech.

I bought a top of the range dare2b jacket with 70% off about 5 years ago, honesly cant fault it, was bought for one season, but I look every year and nothing has yet convinced me to change

You havent mentioned gloves, very important, poor gloves will get wet when you fall over. Nothing makes skiing more miserable than wet hands. Oh other than skiing through clouds, thats pretty miserable ;)

Dont knock buying second hand on ebay. Lots of people go skiing once and find its not for them. I got a very good pair of ski boots on ebay a few years back for about £30, cost was over £300 and I genuinely think they were used once (as advert claimed)
Was someone falling for the buy the expensive gear trap, who bought some fairly top end boots as a beginner

Definitely buy some nice discounted end of line stuff. Ski jackets can be seriously expensive, but don't have to be! Don't be too fussy on brand and you should pick up a bargain.

Do you want a jacket(insulated) or a shell? That is one of the key questions that you should be asking yourself. Shells are more flexible in that you can layer up to adjust to the climate. I have been skiing in temperatures of -20 to +25 so it isn't possible for 1 jacket to perform well in all conditions.

Sportspursuit tend to be good. I got a marmot goretex ski jacket for 200ish and my Gf got some ski trousers for about 40 quid. Just make sure you buy something windproof and layer up

Cheers guys ended up ordering this http://www.sportsdirect.com/helly-hansen-swift-mens-ski-jacket-408224?colcode=40822403 as could justify a bit more on a nice jacket as looks lightweight enough I could wear it in generally bad weather. Unfortunately, nothing else from them in my size unless paying loads so just went with cheap Nevica trousers, goggles, gloves and some socks :D

Are the under layers needed if temps are gonna be 5-6c +?

Personally I'd get some, especially if the bottoms are only £13 and a top £20

You might think 5 - 6c isn't too cold, but don't forget that on a lift temps can feel much colder, not to mention the all important wind chill factor :p

You're better off being too warm than too cold, especially if you're out for the day and can't nip back to grab another layer etc.

I have a very similar HH jacket and I would always wear a base layer - often that is all I have underneath my jacket.
The idea of a base layer is to move your sweat away from your skin so that you don't cool down too much when the sweat is evaporating.
However it will depend on the person - often people I am skiing with have 3-4 layers while I will would be opening vents with only 2 layers...
