Going skiing for the first time this year. I have no idea about the quality of the gear and the brands. Any advice would be welcome looking to get best bang for buck.

Decathlon or maybe Aldi currently.

To be fair, Decathlon do some pretty decent stuff! Over on UKC their mountaineering trousers are recommended constantly as being better and a lot cheaper than a lot of the bigger names.

If you aren't in a rush for things, there are some bargains to be found on Sport Pursuit too. The only problem is the delivery time is usually around a couple weeks to a month.

Yeah, Trespass is probably your best bet for something reasonably decent that will last a little bit, for cheap. Not great but not awful either.

Sports Direct is sad. I remember when "it" used to be Sport and Ski, then Sport and Soccer, then Sports Direct. Each iteration became cheaper and cheaper and worse and worse clothing. :(

And remember layers are your friend
So get some base layer, mid layer and top layer (coat) sorted
Try to avoid cotton for base layer as it holds the sweat, best is a polysomething, as that will wick the sweat away but not hold on to it.
Decent gloves are probably a good shout as well as a beginner, nothing takes the fun out of skiing like cold hands or feet.

Oh and one other place to look is ebay, the animal store sells skiing stuff at a big discount.
Its probably the wrong time of year now, but when they sell their stuff off its usually 70% or so off retail.
dare2b is worth a look, they often have a sale on, I bought a cheap coat (like 70% off) from them 5 years or so ago, each year I look to replace but cant find something I prefer for anything other than daft money

Just looked, dare2b do have a good sale on right now
the animalfreesports onlyhave 30% off a few items of ski wear so probably not worth it as a beginner who may not get the bug, but if you do think to go again keep an eye on that webstore sometimes they have awesome bargains

I have a set of dare2b for when I go playing in the snow up here. It's alright truly nothing outstanding and I wouldn't trust it at altitude.
£50 jacket and £50 pants. Base layer and t shirt. I usually end up losing a layer cos I get so sweaty.

I do need a nice pair of snow boots but at size 15 I'll need a mortgage again

Ive used mine upto 3250M above sea, here, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Plagne
But then like every range there are good and bad items i guess.
I dont think I will go any higher than that ;)

Spent about 100 quid total on my North Face shell, fleece and trousers by shopping around a bit during end of season sales and ebay, all new with tags.

Combined with copious piles of Uniqlo and M&S thermal base layers, I've been cosy warm and dry down below -25C all day out.

If it's your first time though it would make sense to borrow something if you can. Then if you enjoy it, buy your own stuff in the end of season sales.

edit : Jeez, I didn't realise the RRP on my jacket was that much!

I picked it up on an end of season clearance rack at a Snow and Rock in London for 60 quid.

Pro-tip : buy end of season :)
