I'm just wondering whether I can get a better price if i just went with friends (w/ cheapest location) or whether this is good value. I always thought it would be cheaper with school/college because they can get group discounts but i wasn't sure.

At college they're doing a skiing trip for £750 give or take which includes coach transport there and back to Ziller Valley, Austria (nice place for skiing?), 6 nights accommodation full board, ski and boot hire, lift passes for 6 days including 4 hours of ski lessons each day (i've skied before so if i went myself i wouldn't need lessons), evening activities (ice skating, bowling, etc), and full insurance.

What do you think?

I think lessons really add to the cost.
At uni I used to go during easter break to "revise".
Tickets to Austria, Youth Hostel with free ski bus and hire and student pass to lifts. Very cheap!

£750 seems about ok. Similar to what I paid in Chamonix excluding spending money, although Chamonix is ridiculously expensive too.

Oh and you know insurance costs like £6? Just thought I'd let you know so you don't think it's a bargain that it's thrown in or whatever.

£750 is really cheap - I usually pay around £600 but then lift pass and ski hire is about £200 on top of that, then drinks and lunch on top of that. However that is flying. Going by coach will save you quite a lot of money but isn't something i'd want to do again.

The Gf has been looking at 7 days snowboarding in Bulgaria and some other countries. She has found; wHalf-Board , flights, accomodation, passes and rental for £400-450.

I would not want to pay £750 to have to sit on a coach!

I'm paying £309 + about £50 for ski hire for a week in Tignes. Includes travel, accomodation, lift pass and insurance.

Bargain.

Hmm... how much are ski passes daily?

I've done about 14 hours by coach before and although very boring and uncomfortable, i wouldn't mind it if it is worth it? Some of you say it's good, some bad?

It would save a lot of hassle organising it and everything lol.

I've tried looking on things like lastminute.com and whatnot but the hotels seem to be at least like £300 self catered for a week, usually around £400-450?? Andorra for example 7 nights half board with flight travel for £550??? How are you people getting everything so cheap?

There's a reason Bulgaria is cheap unfortunately.

That's cheap? When and how.

As for lift passes generally they will be around £120-160 a week. If you've only been once before (from the 14 hours lessons) I would recommend you do still have more, even if it's just a few private ones (which would probably come to about the same amount). I have my own gear and still have a private lesson or two every year, it irons out your kinks and bad habits and makes you a better skiier/boarder.

Andorra's not that bad for beginners so if you and your friends have never been/only been once or twice then it'll be fine.

I'd suggest an average price for a week's skiing when booked yourself would be around £450 inc pass, however that doesn't include hire or lessons so, which will stick at least another £200 on top (hire alone is around £70 from what I remember).:)

Thanks for all the info everyone :D
So it'll pretty much come to the same price more or less?

I think i'll just go with college then because like you said lessons will be hugely beneficial as i've only been skiing once before (at the end was doing red slopes in sections, but this was about 4 years ago lol), and it'll save the hassle of sorting, finding prices, organising, actually getting people together who have money etc, and i get to meet new people, and i won't have to bother about getting food.

How much would i be looking at to buy my own ski clothing? (cheap as possible but good) What do i need again?
Jacket, salopettes, goggles (or glasses?), thermals, hat, socks and gloves?

If you subscribe to ryan air, you can get deals to some place ( I saw grenoble for £1)
You might get rent and ski hire/pass for 500 if you look hard enough.

Clothes? Quite a lot tbh, a good quality set will set you back £500-1000, however you can get some cheap stuff that's not too bad, have a look in TK Max as they apparently do some reasonable jackets and salopets for cheap (still set you back £100 or so). Goggles, anywhere from £30-£130 from somewhere like Ellis Brigham or most outdoor stores (Blacks/Cotswold/Millets, where you should be able to get most of the stuff as well), hat, well just any old woolie will do really, socks, 2-3 pairs, you could probably get a cheap set (or decent pairs for £15-20 each). Gloves I wouldn't scrimp on these, but a good pair will only set you back around £35-50 and you can use them at home in winter too. Thermals depend on when you're going, Austria isn't the coldest place and if you're going at easter you may not need them (I've spent an entire week before skiing in a T-shirt and thin windproof jacket), however getting a single smartwool base layer may be a good bet (arond £50), then just layer up with your normal clothes.

Have a check with the college first as a lot of those sort of trips can provide jacket, salopets, gloves etc for a small cost, save you a hundred or so. :)

Ryanair are all very well, but i've just booked a flight to and from Spain for £2.99 each way... £75 later (and no hold luggage, let alone ski transfer)...

But yeah, you can get cheap flights for around £70 return with Easyjet or Ryanair, the bonus is that they arrive early, meaning you can get to resort by noon so not loose a day like tour operated flights.

Handed in the deposit today so looks like i'm going with college lol. Just easier that way.

Will check with college first about clothing though.
I can borrow my mates gloves, already have socks, hat, cheap thermals, so all i need is salopettes, a jacket and goggles. About £150 which isn't bad.
Do you recommend goggles over glasses?

if its your first time, wait for tesco or big supermarkets to do their ski stuff. it is dirt cheap and perfectly functional for piste bashing.

i got a pair of £15 ski pants which have lasted 3 years now from tesco. much better than the animal **** which i destroyed in two days or the north face "off piste pants" which didnt have patches of durable material covering the ankles so they got shredded by the inner edge of skis. tk max are good too.

also glasses over goggles. goggles steam up and will drive you nuts.

I have both, however I used to pretty much ski only in glasses. It really depends on the weather however, goggles are good for bad weather but generally glasses are better. (Until you get better, when skiing fast means you can't see as your eyes water in glasses.):p

That's a possibility, I used to use cheap stuff before I could actually afford the good stuff, but you really do get what you pay for. A decent pair of Salopets (I have a Salomon pair atm) really helps, your legs don't get as cold, they are wind proof and they do have thicker material in places needed, unlike the cheap ones I used to have.

As for goggles steaming up, either they are cheap and nasty ones (good quality ones have anti mist coatings that stop it, mostly) or you aren't using them properly. I've only ever had goggles steam up on me once and that was because I had them stored wrong. Also NEVER slide glasses and more importantly goggles up onto your head, they will just collect the steam from your head and when you try and put them on again the'll be misted up.:)

One tip about socks - make sure you get a good pair, I used to use cheap tube socks but last year I got some half decent Snow + Rock ones. The difference is like night and day. When your feet are squashed up in a boot all day the slightest wrinkle in the sock will really be noticable by the end of the day.

Another thing worth spending money on is gloves - make sure they are goretex, if not they will be soaked by lunchtime on the first day, especially if you're a beginner.

As for Jacket and goggles last year I got some Bonfire brand Sallopettes and Jacket and they are great and really good value. I also have a Fleece that I can zip in which is great.

Thanks again for the info.
I think i'll buy some glasses then and borrow the goggles from a friend, so i have the choice depending on the weather.

Yeah the socks are quite decent from what i remember, might have to get some more though because i've grown from 4 years ago :P

And yup he's got Goretex (i think). You know i'm just gonna buy the full kit (minus the goggles) lol. Easier in the long run.

I'll shop around. Any good sites or other good shops to go to?
