I play football on a 5v5 side and as anyone knows theres a whole lotta running around.

I want to inprove my fitness (not get outta breath quickly)

I have been doing sprinting but I was wondering if I buy a speed rope will this be as effective as jogging and sprinting?

Thanks Luke

I'm going to get a good skipping rope. Weather is crap now and I can't road run where I live (dangerous roads) and the normal fine weather runs I do are through farmland which again is too dangerous when it's wet.

It can only help mate. I don't think I can skip very well but I'll soon get the hang of it and work out some tasty split routines. Better than nothing!

I'm pretty sure jogging is the best form of cardio workout, you would have to skip for a lot longer to have the same effect.

Basically, how knackered you are at the end of a workout is a good way to judge how good a workout you have done. I can't imagine you'd be as tired from 10 minutes skipping as you would be the same time jogging.

You can get yourself worn out pretty fast cycling.

More exertion in each stride if you know what I mean.

But I've heard that it's easy to over do it.

I'd be more tired from 10 minutes of constant skipping than jogging to be honest.

Skipping is better than both jogging and cycling. Only swimming is better than skipping IMO.

I've had a speedrope for a while now. A 5 minute constant skip is an absolute killer at first.

I've always found it hard to keep a rhythm whilst skipping.

Do you bounce on both feet at the same time or one foot to the other? I guess skipping is good for the calves as well?

Actually you're right, I should have used sprinting as the example as jogging could be interpreted as any speed.

Got to agree with that, remember my legs killing me the next day the first time I started, and i used to jog/run loads!

I've started skipping too just this weekend. Did 20 mins over the course of the day (it was pretty stop start till I got the hang of it) and the next day I felt terrible.

I bounce on both feet at the same time but shift the weight from one foot to the other every bounce or every other bounce. So I start with ball of left foot on floor with toes of right foot also on floor, then bounce so that ball of right foot is on floor with toes of left foot - hope you understand that :).

As in this vid from 13 seconds to 15 seconds.

Skipping can't beat a good run over tough terrain with hard inclines... especially with hill sprints and intervals, which you ought to be doing as it works components of fitness relevant to football.

You guys need to broaden your knowledge when it comes to 'cardio' training. there are various energy systems which you need to train depending on how you use them in your sport... ;)

The majority of people can't do that. My legs need to be able to play football, turned ankles are no good to me.

Swimming is the most effective form of cardio. If you swim 3-4 times a week at a high pace mate i gurantee you will feel the effects within a very short period of time and it will boost your overall fitness tremendously.

:/

I know

You will only develop problems if you don't stretch and rest properly.

The point Clerkin, is that it works your Anaerobic energy systems during the interval sprints and the muscle fibers that you use during sprinting.

Which is more relevant to a game of five a side football than jogging on the spot and simply getting a mediocre Aerobic work out are.

you can add Psuedo sprints into skipping if you want... but not only are they much less efficient than incline sprints as part of a real run but in my opinion are just as risky because your posture will be poor doing it on the spot.

You're just as likely to become injured during a less intense long duration exercise if you don't do it properly. ;)

My point is Wang, you would all benefit from making your training more relevant to your sport by expanding your understanding of 'cardio' :)

I'm sorry but thats rubbish.

Running on uneven surfaces is far more likely to produce injuries :)
