Anyone do any, is it good for cardio?

Just thought as it's and don't need much space it might be good a few times a week to top up?
 
To bump an old thread - are there recommendations on the best ropes to use? I'm probably looking for something that is tough enough to cope with being used outdoors and also beginner friendly (having had a quick Google there seems to be a dizzying array of options)

running requires decent shoes - minimum £100 then also a park nearby or a treadmill, etc
swimming requires a pool
rowing requires a rower
etc, etc

£1 for a skipping rope. don't need specialist shoes any decent trainers will do

Learn to do double unders - that will knacker you in a hurry. Get a decent set of "ropes" and it's cheap and simple cardio.

what does a decent set do that a £1 set can't?
 
Skipping is great, although when starting out it is very annoying.

Spin from the wrist and lower arm, not the whole arm.

Try not to spread your arms out wide when skipping.

Skip to some music and listen to the beat this can help with timing (You want to hear the rope hit the floor to the same time as the beat of the song and jump at the same time)

Don't have the rope too short as it will always clip your feet.

When you get to the double under learning, jump higher than you think and keep your body straight.

But other than that, just need to practice... like anything. Will eventually just click.

what does a decent set do that a £1 set can't?

Sorry, it's not the cheapest cardio. Running stairs is the cheapest cardio. It costs zero.
 
Well after 4 months of skipping almost every day I have made incredible progress with skipping, both in terms of endurance and the tricks I can do.

I have however gotten through 3 ropes of increasing cost, as I tend to skip on the garden patio and the ropes wear out really quickly.

First one was a plastic Reebok speed rope - plastic wore out and it snapped.
Second one was the kids' rope with plastic beads - dragged through the air too much as I got faster.
Third was one like iMacMart posted above - wore out and the wire started fraying, flaying my shins when I made a mistake.
I've now just ordered this one from Amazon - hopefully it lasts longer.

The main thing with skipping is that I absolutely love it for some reason. Very important in terms of getting you off your bum to actually do some cardio.

What I don't love is that all the ropes have increased in price by about 100% recently; still great value for the workout it gives though.

What muscles does it work?

I never actually got round to buying a rope. But I might now.
 
Skipping is great. I started years ago when i use to go to boxing classes. The best rope i've found, and which i've been using for years is the Nike 2.0 meter speed rope. All previous ropes i tried would last a few months, then snap. Unless doing a team sport, i always found cardio boring, but will happily skip without issue, and look forward to it.

Mines started showing the metal cord under the plastic as I skip in my garden now as my work gym is shut, and the slate slabs tear through the hard plastic

It now hurts even more if I make a mistake :)

Might get this one though?
