Skirting Boards

Anywhere you can go in person and pick the timber yourself, or at the very least check the quality of stock before hand. Buying timber online is a big risk, depending on how reputable the company/local branch is you could end up with twisted and warped lengths full of knots, knot holes and cracks. Once its delivered to the pavement outside your house good luck getting them to collect it for return.

We replaced our skirting board in our garage (don't ask), and I just got some MDF skirting from Wickes/B&Q, can't remember which. The only slight annoyance was it came in 2m lengths rather than 3m so I had a couple more joins than I would have preferred, but otherwise fine.

The MDF stuff came pre-primed, and without knots so I didn't have to seal it. I just used No More Nails to the plasterboard, painted it with satin wood and it's been perfect since.

Thanks for the reply.
Sorry I do not understand what knors, pre primed means.

So, Do i just measure the old skirting board length, take it to a local merchant and give the measurements to them?
Thanks.

Knots in the wood, they require sealing before painting or they will bleed through over time.
Pre-primed means it comes ready for final painting.

Go online next time, i got 5.4m lengths saved having any joins along the runs.

Nope, just measured each wall and cut to length making sure to scribe the inside corners and miter the external corners. Fixed to the wall with Pink Grip, bit of decorators caulk along the top then painted.

It seems easy except for the scribe and miter parts. I have someone coming over to give me a quote. I'll see then.
If I were to for example got to b&q and buy the boards, could I ask them to miter and scribe it?

I ripped out all the crappy wooden skirting board and replaced them all with UPVC skirting.

Looks miles better and a lot easier to fit.

You just cut to size, and buy the inner and outer corners separately.

Also looking at doing some skirting soon so this thread is useful..

Excluding UPVC, do people have a preference between MDF and timber? Just popped down my local builders merchants and they have both.

the guy came around for a few quote. For 2 rooms and the hallway he is charging £200 labour only. Seems too much for 2 rooms. They are small too.

MDF or HDF for painting, timber for varnish. Really is no reason to get timber if your painting it.

Going off my 2 hours a room, that's 4 hours so £50 an hour, doesn't seem massively high. But i would expect someone doing it for a living to be quicker.
Just watch some videos on youtube see what you think. I even justified buying a mitre saw considering i will be doing the whole house plus some coving.
