Hi all, looking at cars for my partner and thinking a Skoda Kamiq ticks the boxes.

Looking at around a 2022 model and see it comes in a 1.5 and 1.0 110 ps version.

At first I was only considering the 1.5 but after reading I've read quite a few positive reviews on the little 1.0. Can anyone here comment on how to they find it. She mainly does town driving with the odd motorway trip here and there. So it doesn't need to be fast but also we don't want a snail. Personally I'm skeptical off a small engine in the long-term reliability but willing to be proved wrong!

I had it in an Octavia, it was perfectly fine to be honest, would happily live with one again.

I have both engines in different cars. Both are reasonably solid.

Neither are a snail, but the 1.5 has better “push” from low revs if trying to join a roundabout.

1.0 is fine once up and spinning North of 2000rpm and actually sounds better - like half of a 911, but the 1.5 does pull better especially if loaded up with stuff.

Long ago I test drove some cars with these engines and was always surprised by how spritely the 1.0 was for the size. If not doing a lot of miles and fuel consumption isnt a concern I would probably go with the 1.5 though as theres less to go wrong as I dont think its turbocharged?

I'm assuming it'll be the same/very similar to the 1l engine in the Seat Ibiza, in which case I found it absolutely fine when I had mine mated up to the DSG gearbox. Plenty nippy without being a chore on longer/faster runs.

My wife has a CH-R for the same use case, I think an NA Hybrid is a bit better suited to town driving but others might disagree.

Similar sized car, ultra reliable but CVT

Just thought I'd throw it out there because that's exactly what it's used for

Had a Seat Ibiza 1.0 110 for a week in Spain, it was perfectly fine.

Currently drive a Polo GTI, was thinking the other day I would mind downgrading to 1.0 if I have to due the financial reasons.

We have a 2019 Skoda Scala and the 110 engine is absolutely fine in it. Probably the better engine on balance unless you are trying to overtake on country roads a lot.

Worth testing driving both, the 1L doesn't have a lot of torque under 2000 revs so if you catch it under those revs it is very sluggish. Might not be an issue depending what you are coming from however if you are used to a lot of torque under 2000 revs it is frustrating and if you want to make a quick entry onto a roundabout when moving under 15-20mph ish you need to be in 1st gear.

Thanks yes I think we will test drive both. Partner is only coming from a 1.2 Hyundai i20 so either will most likely feel faster to her. But I will no doubt drive it every now and then too so we both need to be happy with it.

Even the 1l will feel like a rocket ship in comparison, I remember getting the 1.2 i20 as a courtesy car once and nearly had a crash pulling out of the dealer as I hadn't realised how gutless it was in comparison to my 1l turboed i20.

Have you looked at something like a 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric - similar price, much nicer vehicle? No issues with performance at any speed, longer warranty and generally nicer place to be inside with better tech.

I've done the same going from my car to the Hyundai. Foot flat down, wait a while and you might hit 20mph soon.

I would be open to that but partner does not want another Hyundai after a bad experience with the local dealer.

I have to say Hyundai dealers are either great or terrible, avoided out local one like the plague and used independents to do servicing, only went to them for a warranty issue and that was a pain in the butt.
Could always look at the better sister brand that is Kia, eNiro are great and you have the lengthy 7 year warranty as well. Or as a bit of a curveball, maybe an MG4 - although might be a bit too fast, they offer immense value second hand, and again 7 year warranty.
