Hi guys,

Would appreciate some quick feedback from those more in the know than me. I’ve been in discussions with Skoda for the past couple of days over a Kodiaq and just want to know if I should push any harder, we seem to have reached an impasse with prices that’s all! Therefore, is this a good deal?

Skoda Kodiaq 1.5 TSI SEL DSG (7 seats)
4 years
10000 miles
Extras: Metallic paint (595), towbar preparation (190) family pack (180)
£300 per month
£2778 deposit (+3500 contribution)
11925 final balloon payment

My simple brain works this out @ 300x48, add 2778, add 11925 and minus the 3500 contribution = total cost £25603. Seems to be cheaper than anything I can find elsewhere for the same spec?

Currently leasing an A5 which is due back end of January and the price of the Skoda (and size, features and practicality) appeals to me, particularly as I’m considering a caravan later down the line. Can’t seem to get anything equivalent from more sought after brands for anywhere near this. Not new anyway.

Would appreciate thoughts on the deal and the car itself? Particularly from those who own a Kodiaq?

I went to look at these as I'm in need of a big family car but don't want an MPV. Didn't drive it, but I thought the dash was slow for a new car (probably spoiled by a new A class with MBUX I had for a week though). When you look at how low Superb prices have plummeted I thought it best to wait a bit to see if something similar happens. I saw some very cheap lease deals not long ago for the Kodiaq, say £2400 deposit and £150 a month for 2 years. I'll probably get a ~2016 Superb if my car gives up the ghost next year but will still be looking at Kodiaqs if the value for money is as good as the Superbs.

I've got a Kodiaq and will post in more detail later tonight but wanted to call out your maths is way off. The above numbers come to £29,103.

Sorry, I forgot to show the 3500 deposit contribution deduction, edited.

Not sure that makes sense?

You're paying
300 x 48 = £14,400
£2,778 deposit
£11,925 ballon

Total you pay out of your pocket = £29,103

Then the dealer is adding £3,500 to the deposit to make the deposit £6,278 giving a total cost of £32,603.

The way you've calculated it they'd actually be putting £722 back in your pocket as the deposit (£2,778 - £3,500)

P.s. This is one the reasons I despise how car dealers try to sell cars. Its the only market I know of where they go out of their way to avoid you working out what the actual cost of the product is.

Abyss is right, you need to view the 'contribution' as making your deposit figure in the deal £6278 but with you only having to pony up £2778 yourself. The way you've tried to factor it in is as if they're giving you cashback.

£26.5k via a broker: https://www.drivethedeal.com/buy-a-..._Seat__85824.html?Capid=85824&type=discounted

Wave that in front of them and see if they can get close to it.

mhmm, you guys are right. Feel a bit of a fool

I used carwow initially and they came back with 26.3k as the offer via PCP before I got them down a touch with initial deposits and options. I’m guessing the drive the deal price is a cash price and doesn’t factor in the actual cost I’d pay with interest over the 4 years? Similar to the carwow deal I’ve taken?

I test drove one a couple of years ago but it had the 2.0 VRS engine and a lovely interior to match. I really loved it and would have bought it but my wife said she would never drive it due to the size. So I passed on it.

But it's a big car. A 1.5 TSI might be a little slow for such a big car.

Go via drive the deal. Car would be supplied by Skoda dealership in Great Yarmouth. I’ve got a sportline on order and the discount to RRP is c17%. Have to take the finance on offer but can settle immediately.

Putting that config through the Skoda website configurator, it comes to £31,925, so the effective rate of interest is very low on the deal (around 0.5% per year), assuming list price. What was the interest rate quoted on the PCP?

I have a Kodiaq 7 seater - does everything I need it to (ferrying family, kids and crap around the place, towing my Caterham to racetracks). Really like it as a family wagon, would definitely get another one. I have the 2L diesel though, so a bit more power than the 1.5

3.9% apparently buddy. I’ve asked for a call back from drive the deal for my piece of mind to see if they can do better with the same terms. Will see what they say.

I am looking forward to having it though, at least while the kids relatively young (currently 3 and 7). Particularly if we do purchase a caravan.

No need to at all, it's what makes this forum so beneficial. I see far too many people who get wrapped up in the new car showroom experience that dealers use and end up getting lost in the numbers.

It looks like the going rate for the car you want (inc towbar, family pack and metallic) is £26,683 after the £3.5k deposit contribution. 3 different dealers have all come back with the exact same price on carwow. Their finance rate offer looks to be 3.9%

On this basis and using your details above the carwow deals will also be around:

Car price - £30,183
Customer deposit - £2,778
Dealer Contribution - £3,500
Final payment - £11,925

Amount financed - £11,980
Length of finance - 48 months
Mileage - 10,000
APR - 3.9%
Monthly payment - £309

This is inline with what you've been quoted so is probably as good as it'll get at the moment for buying one brand new.

The other option you could look at is leasing, where you can get it for £1,973 front, then £294 a month over 3 years. You'd avoid having to pay car tax, but will have a £210 arrangement fee, potential bill for any damage at the end and bear in mind in the PCP route the likelihood is the car will be worth more than the final payment so you'll likely have equity in the car.

Not going to talk about the deal but the Kodiaq is a big car (I have a 2.0L diesel VW Tiguan Allspace) and if you're towing a caravan I'm not sure the 1.5 TSI engine will cut it.

If you're really looking at a significant amount of towing, it would be worth giving consideration (IMO) to a 2.0TSI or 2.0TDI as these will come with a wet clutch DSG, whereas the 1.5TSI will be the low torque application dry clutch variant. This doesn't have a great reputation for reliability generally but with particular respect to towing, the dry clutch units don't deal with clutch slipping as well as the wet clutch cars do and you'll see suggestions from other uses that they can be difficult to use for low speed maneuvering when towing. Plenty of speculation that high loads contribute to the failure rate of these DSGs and so i'd be wary if this is something you'd be doing more than once or twice a year.

Thanks for that. So given I’ve got it at £300 per month with the same figures you’ve listed, I’ve got an alright deal then? As said I’ll wait and see what drivethedeal come back with though before fully committing.

I did consider lease and got quoted 286 with 6 months upfront to be fair, but I do like the prospect of, eventually, not having to pay a monthly figure for a car. At least PCP gives me an option to pursue that eventually. My commute could change significantly in the next 2 years as well so at least the PCP gives me more flexibility if I go over mileage.

I’ve tried to research this and everything I read suggests I’d be ok with a typical 1300-1400kg caravan. A friend has the 1.5 petrol too (he initially drew me towards the Kodiaq) and tows regularly so I would hope it would be ok!?

I'd say so yes. Looks to be inline with carwow and broadspeed and I can't find anything any cheaper elsewhere. Even buying 12 months old gives limited benefit as the used prices are high.

Ok thanks. To be fair initially they had forgot to add the extra options despite telling me they had, hence the low cost. When they realised I kicked up a fuss and they agreed to honour the same price with the options.

Sure you'll be fine, but just have a quick read of this as in previous years Skoda haven't homologated the 1.5TD 7 seater for towing:
