Can the power to the cigarette lighters in my Yeti be turned off?

I have a Skoda Yeti. It has bags of headroom and legroom and is generally a great car. Like many here I have a dashcam, which plugs in to the cigarette lighter socket. Unfortunately the power to the fag lighter is not cut when the engine is off or the key removed from the ignition. Is this changeable? Because having to remove the power cord to the dashcam every time is a right pain. And there's a rear socket, and I'd really like to put a dashcam there, but can't as the power is always on. I drive irregularly so dare not leave them in, constantly draining the battery.

All cars have a constant live circuit for things like clocks and alarms, sometimes the cigarette lighter is included in this circuit.

Easiest option would probably be to add a small toggle switch into the live feed to the socket. Or as Misschief says, have a search and see if you can disable it on the ecu with Vagcom.

I'm looking at the option of putting a Dashcam in my Fabia, which has a permanent live socket (as all VAG cars do).

Over on Briskoda someone fitted a 'piggyback' fuse jumper (loads on Amazon/ebay) into a 'switched live' fuse in his fuse box and added a 'hidden' lighter/power socket under his dash and plugged his Dashcam into that!...

That's probably the way I'm gonna do it, as it's not a permanent modification, plug it in... pull it out when I sell/trade in! :) Also Plus I then won't have the power lead trailing up the centre console and getting in the way!

My dashcam stays powered up permanently. I only unplug it if I'm not going to use the car for more than a couple of days, which isn't very often.

Same in my new Octavia, got a 1tb USB HDD plugged in and it is always spinning when the car is off. How quickly would it drain the battery and does it have any protection to stop the battery from going dead?

Know the 2013 Foucs I had just cut all power.

I just unplug the satnav/phone charger/camera or whatever I have connected and leave the plug sitting in the front ashtray whenever I don't want something to charge or waste power when I'm not in the car. It takes less than a second and has become a force of habit.

I can understand why you would want a more tidy solution so that the inside of your car is always organized etc, but if it is only unplugged when you are not in the car, it isn't a massive issue. Surely it isn't worth fiddling with ECU settings or wiring in switches?

Cut the power to the lighter socket and secure it. Take a new wire from an alternative power source that isn't permanently live, add a fuse, connect it back up to the power socket with a soldering iron and shrink wrap. Fixed :)

Because accidents can happen to anyone?

Not frequently enough to want to permanently video all your driving. It's the latest internet fad fuelled by scarey cash for cash videos watched by people who don't consider probability.

It's more likely to accidentally record your own driving mistakes if anything.

IIRC they continually overwrite themselves and you can store a section of footage after a crash at the push of a button, though I may be mistaken.

Also you can edit out your driving mistakes. ;)

I believe in many vag cars you can move the fuse for the 12v socket into a new position and it will turn off with you ignition. I know the Leon I had a for awhile had this capability.

Exactly. Most people go years without an accident. Why bother to video ALL your driving?
