Hi,

Thinking of building a new computer for general computing and also some gaming (X Plane 10) and was thinking of using a Skt 2011 processor. Is Intel going to continue processors using this socket? I've googled but cant seem to find anything confirming either way.

Matt

Don't buy a platform expecting to be able to slot in a new processor in the future, the days of a socket lasting several upgrade cycles are long gone and they're not coming back.

If a Socket 2011 system fits your current needs then go for it, if you want to put it off until Haswell-E then you're looking at a wait until Q3 this year.

Yeah socket 2011 gets replaced this year with Haswell-e which is on a x99 chipset instead or the current x79.

Pretty much all Intel sockets get replaced each chipset so get the best you can get at the time you need it. Always something better out in 6 months to a year :)

socket 2011-3 is due out in Q3 2014 as it stands...

So it will be out of date in 5-7 months, but isn't that always the case with PC hardware? xD

If you get a 6-core IB-E CPU you should be sorted in that department for atleast 3-4 years tbh!

By the time Haswell-E comes out, socket 2011 will have been in existence for 3 years. I anticipate a similar lifespan for Haswell-E in pure socket terms. Both sockets will "last" a lot longer than 3 years though.

From all current sockets (FM2, AM3, 1150, 2011) only the FM2 has future. All other 3 are dead, due to there are going to be no new CPUs for them.

Saying that, a 4930K, makes sense, given that with Mantle and better multi threading games, it will last for 5 years to everyone else.

However saying that any i7 since SB, with a healthy overclock to 4.5+ will last for as long also.

Prefer a used SB-E myself, if you can get a good clocking one. IB-E for overclocking is a bit of a let down compared to SB-E.
