I just had a letter from Sky this morning. They are rolling this out in my area in partnership with a company called Hollybox. I signed up on the web address on the letter and the phone rang 5 mins later.

The deal was it was completely free for 12 months whilst they tested it. But I had to sign up for any Sky TV package (he said it would be heavily discounted). The install would go ahead in September.

Unfortunately my sky broadband is on an industrial unit (warehouse), so I thought it was best to not go for it. I think I should actually have a business service, but they didn't complain when I signed up as "unit 2" so..

The guy in the unit next door had the same letter to his home address (he lives locally) and it was completely free for him as he already had Sky TV.

Anyway, anyone else been offered this? I can't see anything about it online.

No, but thanks for making me jelly of those lucky enough to have such speeds.

More to the point I was so close to, but its really not possible to have a satellite dish on the side of a warehouse I think :D

Maybe you need a TV package as they will trial supplying you IPTV? I don't know.

IPTV as a backup would be very useful, especially for the times when the satellite signal is lost due to a bit of drizzle. :p

The fact that TV will be required is part of the connection trial so it'll be a non starter. I'm guessing on network IPTV will be a hell of a lot cheaper to roll and more controllable than the current broadcast offering, reduce piracy, remove service calls for dish/cable issues and reduce install costs and roll out soft PVR functions without the need for box upgrades such as the need for additional tuners which they've avoided offering for over a decade despite increased demand.

They also might finally be able to live up to the quote regarding not licensing Tivo because they could do a better job themselves.

This iptv over a broadband connection or are they pulling their own cable down streets like virgin do it?

I phoned up to see if my area was being piloted, but all I got was broken english olga trrying to sell me an upgrade to fibre pro. which I already have.

I don't have Sky TV, since I don't have TV, but my parents in the countryside do. We found a few years ago they save on bills (internet included) if they went all out on Sky. I guess my dad forgot to switch to it, but they won't be getting this since their area doesn't even have fibre optic yet.
*2 seconds later* Turns out they do. Considering how much they pay for their connection, they are getting ripped off. I'll have to convince them to change now I guess. Plus to check whether they can get this 1gb broadband. Thinking about it now, 100mb would be just enough right now.

I certainly find that to be the case. Going all in the with sky, I don't have line rental fees for the next year, and I'm getting the fuill TV packaged for the price of the family pack.
