Sky and Billion 7800N Help

Hi folks

Have a 7800N to replace my Sky Netgear 834GT

On 5Mb Adsl
PPPOa
Have sky router username and password.

Billion will see the upload and download speed but won't connect

Tried VC/Mux and LLC

VC mux = authentication failed
LLC just keeps trying to connect in a loop.

Spent a week reading all the Sky user forums and trying various settings etc so I'm hoping someone on here has had the same problem, cracked it and can post some settings.

As above best to copy and paste the username and password you got from the router. Dis you enter the right mac address when you punched it into the sky tool? Im sure the wan and lan are very similar like one digit difference so make sure you put in the right one

No worries at all andy, if your still having issues just post back and i'll try help you through the settings. I have this this router like yourself and im also with sky and it works great. I have a crappy long line and can only get about 3mb. The billion does a good stable job tho so i was happy with paying out the £100+ for it

cool. I get 5mb stable with the original sky netgear 834GT (White) but pings are crap and generally stability is very flaky to say the least(3.8mb to 5.1). Also, wireless coverage is very sporadic and laggy (we live in an old house with very thick stone walls) From what I read up on, the Billion range have excellent stability, range and SNR.....some people even getting improved speeds so I thought I'd give one a bash I'll have a faff around with it today and give you a shout back. If VC/Mux is failing authentication.....are you sure the credentials are correct?

"LiamCrane".....you were spot on Pal.......I was keying in the WAN MAC address rather than the LAN MAC address (what a noob) LOL

Did you get any increase in speed or attn?
I ask because I tried one a while back and found no speed increase at all for me,so it was returned under the DSA to the forest.
I tweaked and followed everyone's advice too.Am on sky too

Great stuff glad you have it working! Just remember whenever you make a change in the router settings to click apply then save config at the bottom its an easy mistake that some people forget, if you just click apply and dont save the config once the router is rebooted you will lose whatever it was you changed.

You can also have a play around with the snr (signal to noise ratio) on these routers. By lowering this ( skys default is 7db) you can get a bit more speed at the cost if line stability. Im not saying your line will drop out you just need to find the sweet spot. I have seen some people go as low as 3db but i can only go to 6db max due to my long line. It gives me around a 500kb boost in connection which when on a long slow line is great. I need all i can get lol

Definitely getting better speed. Used to get:

4mb ish down
460 ish up

Now getting:

5.1 Down
800 up!!!!!!!!!!

Old router was the Netgear (Sky locked) 834GT and was only G so wireless range and speed improvemt is HUGE on my netbook, tablet and iphone. Not saying I'm getting MASSIVE boost in download speed....I mean overall "Snappiness" ie. click something and it opens. I am a networking noob but can only put this down to the 7800N being a bigger, newer, beefier router that can handle more throughput cleanly, accurately and without bloating the buffer. EVERYTHING just feels much snappier and quicker. MW3 survival has been very jittery lately and now is silky smooth. Hoping the improved SNR on this router will steady the line enough to keep ping in check

I'll post up some specs etc from a router info program later this evening...off to cut the lawn whilst its fine

all boxes are ticked on the ADSL settings page bud. Thought it auto selected? Thanks again for the continuous updates and knowledge. When it comes to hardware and OC'ing I'm extremely experienced as you'll see from my sig......networking on the other hand....I am the biggest noob on the planet and always keen to learn new stuff Keep it coming

Guide as Promised. This is for Sky ADSL (PPPOa) on Billion 7800N Router set up.

first job....you need to go here to your SKY router set up page (usually enter 192.168.0.1 in your browser) and copy your routers LAN MAC address. LAN MAC address (NOT WAN)

HIGHLIGHTED IN RED

TOP TIP.....open up a note pad or word doc to copy and paste settings etc.

Then go here:

http://www.cm9.net/skypass/

Select your router and enter your LAN MAC address (NOT WAN)

Simply copy and paste this. You should then get a screen giving you SKY's hidden username and password for your router. Paste these to your notepad/ word file.

Ditch the SKY router and fire up the Billion

Enter 192.168.1.254 in browser and enter Billion 7800N set up page.

Copy that screen but, obviously, enter your own sky router username and password info you obtained earlier.

At this stage, the router is set to pretty much sort itself out so that should be it. There are a few other odds and sods you may need to tinker with but we'll cross that bridge if we need to later. All depends on your connection type etc.

Have a bash and report back with your hopefully successful findings.

Once sorted I'll fine tune the guide based on feedback and bang up as a separate thread
