I ordered sky on 6th july, the sky plus box is installed and properly working. I also ordered sky talk and have received a letter saying the line will go active on 27th july. However when i ordered sky talk with sky plus I was told i needed a phone line installing. I was then told someone was coming to install the line on 27th.

On sat 25th I rang sky and spoke to a very unhelpful indian woman who didnt know if someone was coming out on the 27th or not. All she could tell me in the 15 minute phone call i had to her was that i would either be informed by a phone call or by post.

This isnt much use when my housemate has to take another day off work and I have to go through £7 on my pay and go phone to be told "we dont know if someone will come out to you or not"

I have connected the 'phone line' from the back of the sky plus box to an existing phone socket marked with NTL. I dont know whether this is active or not.

How does a phone work if the only socket goes to the sky plus box?
What is my next step to getting broadband, presumably ring sky for the 4th time and speak to another unhelpful foreign person?

If the box says NTL, it sounds like you don't have a BT line at all and Sky will need to arrange for BT to do that if you're letting them handle it. The alternative is to order a BT voice service direct from BT, but a) you won't be able to use Sky Talk IIRC, b) it'll cost you £125 and c) if Sky have already ordered it you might wind up with two.

Not sure about the activation, think the engineer did that when he came. On sky services you can change pin but it says can only be connected when sky box is connected to a phone line. Instead it give you the number for sky customer service.

Yes, I am paying line rental to sky talk. Just dont know if someone is coming out or not because i was told someone would be coming out on 27th by someone on the phone and that my phoneline should become active on 27th (even though i dont think i even have one!) Sky dont seem to know either, the indian woman didnt seem to care either

and also the line out the back of the sky+ box is only there for activation isn't it?

Sky randomly dial in now and again to check if the box is where it should be (i.e. at your house). After 12 months you aren't required to have it plugged into the phone line any more. If you don't want to have it plugged into the phone line at all then I think you pay £20 at the beginning of your contract to not have it plugged in.
