Probably asked a million and one times before, but since skys services seems to change a lot i guess ill ask

a) what router is it atm? used to be a nice netgear but heard they went the sagem route?

b) if said router is crud, can the settings be squeezed from sky under conditions of the router not meeting say, the wireless demands of the household?

c) does the service still suffer from horrendous game pings and do they still uprate to compensate?

d) if its a sensible router is it still possible to flash them to factory to unlock all the settings sky block from you?

apologies for those who feel they will be repeating themselves

A) They're still using the netgear DG834GT - as well as their phase two Netgear and Sagem 2504 routers. Unfortunately there's no way to specify exactly which one you'd get.

B) Nope - as long as they're providing you with a broadband service thats all thats required.

C) Pretty much yeah - its interleave all the way with Sky, however if your exchange is unbundeled you can request your max delays to be lowered which will reduce your ping times.

D) Yup - though Sky will tell you otherwise. At the moment they've no way of tracing which router has been flashed and which hasn't ;)

thankfully we are unbundled, mother likes the sky package for the simple fact its peanuts, just needed to clear up the fine print if you will, looks ok.

i go in via wired and the rest of the household are fairly close range wireless now, 1 wall max so wouldnt be a massive issue if we got stuck with the sagem, if there is much difference

does the flashing improve the routers ability to do its job or is it just done by people who hate being chained down by over protective firmware?

Sky will recommend the router be connected directly to the master telephone socket and not use any telephone extension cables. If anything I'd suggest an extended ethernet cable over a telephone extension, or wireless as you've said.

To be honest if your not having any issues with the router you receive then there's no point in flashing it, some people report the router is more stable after they've flashed it but these are the people who have been having problems. The routers themselves are actually pretty good, it's just (in some cases) Skys firmware that can cause issues.

Reflashing my DG834GT router with proper netgear firmware didn't cure my instability issues.
The router still needs rebooting usually daily.
