I have a sky box in our bedroom hooked up to a pc so we can record stuff. Its about 3years old now and used to be our main box in the living room until we got sky+. I dont know why but it keeps shutting off for no reason, ive just put some new batterys in the remote so im hoping its nothing bad. Also did a full power down and im going to keep an eye on it.

This box is a grundig which was known for having psu problems with bad capacitors. It was a brown box refurb given to us at some point when an amstrad box died. Im assuming it was repaired with decent capacitors but could this be an issue still? I dont really want to open it up if I can avoid it.

how often? how long? does it go from power on to going to standby? try this, remove the card and turn it on and see if it will go into standby.if it does not go into standby it is probably not the psu.

Ive only noticed it happen twice, I thought the tv had turned off the first time it happend. I will check the card now.

EDIT: I had a nosey at the menu's and noticed there was an auto-standby option there and was enabled but I just cannot remember if it was there since we got it? I have now turned it off and hoping it was just a firmware update from sky.

It's not just you mate.
My standard Sky box started doing exactly the same thing about a month ago. I use to leave mine on all the time but then all of a sudden i was finding i had to keep switching it back on in the mornings. Its as if the auto stand by function was switched on by an update or something, as I didn't do it.
My new HD box also does the same after about three hours.

didn't sky introduce a feature a few months ago where the box goes into standby if not used for 2 hours. Have a look in your system settings. It's normally enabled by default.

yup, system standby after a couple of hours is the default on newer firmwares. Ours does it all the time, but that's fine with us....

Yup sky introduced the new option on their sky+ boxes so they could meet their green targets or something, I made sure that option was off!

Ever since I turned that standby thing off on the standard box it has been ok (touchwood lol)

I think it only switches it off if its untouched for a couple of hours between 1am and 8am, if your sky+ box is nearly full it will also turn itself of randomly, i have a sky HD box and a normal sky+ box upstairs and they both do this

As said this was introduced about a year ago now for Sky + and HD boxes. It turns your box off after 2 hours between 11pm and 4am. It was extended to standard boxes a few weeks ago.
