Sky Broadband Issue

I keep experiencing an issue where my connection just completely gives up when I am downloading anything intensive, meaning I can literally do nothing else while it downloads.

Today for instance I was downloading some game patches and both Firefox, Chrome and Outlook just wouldn't connect at all.

I tested this by stopping the downloads and they all worked as normal, however once I resumed they all stopped working again.

Admittedly the downloads were using nearly all of my bandwidth however I have never experienced this with other ISP's whereby everything else would just stop connecting.

Is this normal or is it something that I can fix?

Saturating the line may make the connection slow to a crawl. Some routers handle it better than others.

Did you move to a new router when you switched to Sky?

Yep just the bog standard Sky router that they supplied. Will try giving it a restart but I think it might just be their crap hardware.

Steam game patches?

I was downloading the latest patch for the division at the time via uPlay. I will check and see if there's a similar option for that.

I encountered this but only when I first started using a new Sky hub. It turned out it needed a firmware update and the problem ended.

Funnily enough, my replacement hub updated its firmware overnight from one which dated back to 2013 IIRC to the latest version and my recent connection woes seem to have thankfully died a death.

Can I ask which version you're on now? Mine is 2.89.1088.R
I'm not sure I'm on the latest or what.

Haha I know what you mean. The sky website isn't particularly consistent in this respect.

I'm presuming that is the latest version with my router updating itself. Prior to the update it had no IP V6 support and only DYNDNS in the dynamic dns menu where as now there are a couple more to go at.
