Sky Broadband Issues

Hi,

My brother has skyISP at home, due to it being cheap and my mum being skint.

After coming home from school today his net ain't working.

I told him to unplug/reconnect all cables to and from the router, in addition to checking the connection at the phone line socket. He's done that and still it sticks on 'DNS Lookup on xfire' and 'Problem Loading Page' on both firefox and IE.

The weird thing is, he reckons he doesn't have the 'Yellow Exclamation' on the taskbar, which is usually the case when a connection has limited flow. He's also system restored to yesterday ( last time it worked ) on my orders, but still has the same problem, thus ruling out and installation / driver issues.

Any ideas lads?

Also, his postcode is CH448HQ - Wirral, Merseyside.

fist thing you need to do is work out what cant connect and to what.

also i take it your on wireless. are you actually connected to the network??? best bet is to go wired to remove the possibility its a WIFI problem.

things to try. can you lot onto the router, 192.168.0.1 (on the sky ones i believe), wired and wireless. this removes the fact its a potential link to the router problem.

then log into the router.

default is:

user: admin
pass: sky

what dose this say, does the box think its connected?? if not, restart, restart, restart then call sky

navigate to Diagnostics

try and ping 212.58.224.131 - this is the BBC website
what about 72.14.207.99 - this is google.com

this proves that its connected to the internet.

do an DNS lookup. to well know sites.

this will have proved the router is not the problem

now look at your PC.

got to start - Command Prompt

type "ping bbc.co.uk"

if you get nothing try typing the actual ip "ping 212.58.224.131"

if this works, which it should by this point, the problem is DNS because of WIFI

type "ipconfig/all" it should say your DNS server is 192.168.0.1

try all the above

tell us what you get

He's cable connected via ethernet.

After some google columbo style searching, it seems sky are suffering major outages nationwide.

Will keep you posted.

server issue all day, went down at 130, if you were on and had not switched off you should have been fine for most of the night. Their resetting exchanges during the night and hopefully should be fixed by early morning.
