Hey guys been with sky for years im getting 18mb on speed check.
i want to change seems speed check recommends virgin which i cant get at my Post Code.
It also says plus net which i can get 38-40mb for £14.99 a month or 80mb for £20
is it worth upgrading my borderland? would i get faster download speeds on steam etc?
or is there a better company to go with?
also how important is a router? im stuck with a old sky one but use a wire for my PC
Hope you guys can give me some advice as i've never really thought about this before

First post two years after joining?

If you can get fibre (FTTC) with Plusnet you can also get it with Sky. FTTC will be faster. How much faster will depend on various factors. If you look the ISP will give you a fair estimate of the speed you'll get before you sign up.

For a single wired PC the router isn't going to make much of a difference.

No I've gone to Win 10 and seems something is wrong with my profile I've contacted admin
Yeah i think sky is offering me a upgrade will have to call them to see.
So no point going out buying a good router as its wired.
so would it make much difference on download speed on torrents or steam etc.
This is what broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk is saying i can get in my area

If you're happy to stay with Sky (and there's no really good reason not to) check their cashback offers (e.g. Top Cashback). They do have some decent offers for existing subscriber upgrades.

Personally I prefer PlusNet (although I have Sky for TV), and they also have decent cashback offers if you get the timing right.

If you do want to stay with Sky then you really need to speak to retentions and say that you're considering changing Broadband provider and that Virgin have offered you a great deal. If you can get Virgin (and they WILL check) then it opens up more offers. But I never said that.

I upgraded 2 weeks ago to Sky fibre unlimited, was half price £10 plus free activation.
Activated date was yesterday now getting Upstream:9995 Downstream:39998.

Under my girlfriend's name, we're currently with Sky 17mbps. If I go to them either as a returning customer, or as a new customer what are the chances of getting their £10 38Mbps offer? BT's prices have gone up, and even with their £125 pre paid card, it doesn't seem all that worth it...

£125 card makes it cheaper than Sky's £10 deal over the 12 month contract. Another £126 cashback from topcashback.

Yeah just realised that myself, didn't think it through properly ha. Sky are have confirmed we could leave them and rejoin under my name and get the half price offer, but BT's prepaid card, as you say, is 40p per month cheaper.
