Hi,
I have been with Sky broadband for a few years now. Problems are slightly common :)
The current problem is that when i pick up the home phone, the broadband drops connection.
So far i have:
  • Installed new ADSL MicroFilters
  • Tried a new RJ11 cable
  • Tried 3 different routers, 2 Netgear and 1 TP-Link
  • Moved the router (in an attempt to reduce interferance)
  • Done a BT line check, this did show a fault, but has now been fixed and doing a line check now shows no errors
I dont really know what else to try, i have spoken to Sky on the phone who didnt give much information.
Rouer stats currently are: (on the TP-Link router)

SNR Margin : 6.1 9.5 db
Line Attenuation : 31.0 16.4 db
Data Rate : 14518 990 kbps
POWER : 19.3 12.3 dbm
CRC : 1953 216

When the connection is working, it is fast! but in the system log it shows
netMakeChannDial: err=-3000 several times.
When the phone is picked up the CRC errors increases massively and the IP is lost.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advanced

I had a very similar experience with my line a while back. Like you I tried changing cables, moved router, did the line test thing, changed micro filters etc. The connection would be fine mostly but the noise margin would fall through the floor when the phone was in use, but also sometimes when not.

In the end I plugged directly into the test socket and when the connection dropped I listened for line noise with a wired phone. It was noisy so I called BT out. They changed a couple of things on the pole and stuff and the line has been fine since.

I also logged the connection and noise ratio using routerstats lite for a while too.

I found my TP-link 961N quite poor compared with my ancient DG834GT though and struggles sometimes to actually connect up to the Internet.

Thank you for your reply!
I will try the test socket later today. Although i dont get any noise on the phone at the moment, it just causes disconnects.
Hopefuly my TP-Link router will work because my DG834GT is useless...:)
thanks again

If the line drops or your errors increase massively when the phone is off the hook, then you have a HR fault (high resistance).

Report it to BT and tell the engineer that your line makes funny noises. You can tell them you suspect it's a HR fault if you want, and they should sort it in 10 minutes.

Wow! Thanks, would this show up in a BT line check?
And i cant hear any noise on the phone, or not a noticable amount anyway, would HR problems still be a relevent solution?
Thanks again

Indeed. You should use a corded telephone to check the line noise as those cordless DECT ones have a noise suppression circuit that may hide the noise. When I plugged a cheap Argos corded phone into my ex-noisy line it was ten times worse than my DECT phones.

What I had, mainly at times of disconnection as it was pretty clear otherwise, was pops, crackles and shhh sounds.
