I am on NTL 4mb paying £25 a month, I could do with saving £20 a month and having 16mb Sky MAX  (we live in a area where ADSL/Cable operate at good speeds so no worries I suppose about connectivity)

I just had a few questions

1) Is the router Sky provide an OEM Netgear or something?
- does it have 4 ports?
- does it have port forward functuality?
- What is the wireless connection quality on the router like? I currently have a very stable Linksys wireless setup and like it a lot so want to continue using wireless happily!

2) Anyone in the Portsmouth/Gosport area had any issues yet with connection dropouts etc ?

3) Does the IP address assigned by Sky BB change often when you reboot the router? I know it stays static as long as the router remains connected but what if there is a power cut or someone accidentally turns it off! I connect to my pc from work so this is quite important to me.

Cheers!

I know if you play games you will get a high ping due to intervealing. You can mod the firmwire on the Netgear sky routers not sure on the exact model of them. I would guess it has 4 ports like most routers. Do a search there should be all the info you need :).

The Sky router is just a rebranded Netgear DG834GT which can be flashed back to a standard DG834GT with some fudging around. It does have port forward capability and yes it has 4 ports.

I used to have a DG834GT when I was on ADSL and personally I thought it was a piece of crap - it would randomly lock up and the wireless range was poor. However some people have found the total opposite so who knows.

I just went round cousins house to pick up my family and BAM! they got their sky broadband kit today so I have borrowed it for the weekend so I can check the router out and see what the config screens are like and what the wireless signal is like from downstairs :)

Thanks for the info guys!

EDIT*

The Wifi signal seems the same as the linksys (same router position too)

Hmmm atm my router is being pretty dodgy

Overheating and having LCP failure

Final Question, it appears the router supports 108MB wireless connections not just 54G which is good news, I guess this screen below is the port forward screen too ? I see no IP address to forward to like on my Linksys so I am guess because it does not ask for a local IP to forward the port range to that any connected device using those ports will be allowed access ? (this is fine with my setup requirements)

Yep, The portfowarding screen looks simpler to use. Its might be diffrent when flashed backto normal non modded firmwire. But im guessing it will open ports on all machines.

Thanks!

If the router causes problems down the line I will probably just buy another Linksys though but from the looks of it it seems to be able to do the job I need ok.

Glad I'm not the only one that frequently changes the SSID! :o

'Stopusingallthebandwidth' was last weeks. :)

For the port forwarding you first have to define the service - in that case there's an RDP service on port 3389 created so that's fine. You then need to define that service under the firewall rules. Simply go to Firewall Rules then add a new Inbound service - then choose your custom service and enter the IP of the PC to forward to under "Send to LAN Server".

SO that would be for inbound I understand correctly but what about outbound? (eg: when I auth with irc servers an IDENT request is sent (then received back from server) from my machine so an outbound as well as an inbound one would be needed as well ?

Just phoned up sky to find out what my phone line is capable of and the speedtest showed over 8MB \m/

16MB incoming :D

Well the default rule for outbound is to allow everything out anyway so there's no need :)

Yea

You'll get yourself in 2 days

Then your line will be active in about 5 days

I had no internet for like 20 mins

*subject to change due to totally different households

Why are you saying "16mb incoming"? If the speed test showed 8meg?

The speedtest they did over the phone showed "over 8mb", not "8mb"

This means the phone line on this house is capable of above 8MB speeds, the speedtest they did does not give an exact speed, it shows under 8mb or over 8mb and considering this is a newly fitted BT phone line there is no reason why 16MB should not be possible.

Other people after doing research around in the Gosport area are also connecting at 15-16MB on sky broadband.

Gosport may be fairly small but it's got connectivity to all but the wireless internet service that London has :)
