Hey guys

got sky broadband installed last night, and im only getting 3.5mb and i download at around 400-420kbps.

use to be with BT ages ago and i would get around 600-650kbps.
Whats with the sudden drop in performance? Could this be due to the line only being active a short time and it takes time for the line to settle?

I wasnt sure how long my BT broadband had been there cos its my dads and i wasnt living there at the time.

im using sky as well. and tbh there crap. there signal is crap, there intnerts slow. were only get like 3 meg thats nothink. some people are running virgin media with 50 meg.

+1 and that is why I left Sky and got Virgin

50mb can't really beat that!

Sky were giving me 1.1mbps out of "up to 8mbps" at the best I saw the speed drop to 800kbps as well! Ditch them cancel while you can!

Whats your actual line sync speed downstream and upstream from your router?

You may be limited by your telephone line, cant blame Sky for that if so. Use http://192.168.0.1 and username: admin password: sky to get into it and check the figures.

To be fair just about any BB supplier can only supply ADSL BB over your phone line at around the same speed. you can't quantify that Sky are 'crap' because they can't overcome the lawsd of physics. I should also say I've worked ISP tech support before and the vast majority of speed issues are down to internal setup within the house.

To the OP, Sky say 7-10 days where they'll train your line in. You should get similar speeds to what you were getting with BT.

you can't really compare sky with virgin's cable BB speed wise as it's completely different

i'm more than happy with SkyBB on their unlimited package

Sky is rubbish but they usually ask you to wait 10 days before you achieve full speed, I find this a bunch of rubbish thou and only intented to make your cooling off period run out so you can't get out of the contract.

If it still hasn't been a week since you received the full service I'd try and get out of it while you can, sky internet is rubbish, go with BE or o2

Noobie:

You should read the bumpf that comes with sky and then come back and ask that question again in 10 days.

whipitrnd:

Your complete lack of knowledge of internet technology is astounding. you should not post or be giving advise.

psd99:

Again go look up the differences between Cable broadband and ADSL broadband then come back and comment.

OP:

Sky inpose a 10 day line sync bedding in period... the first day or so your connection will be around 4 meg and gradually rise over the first 10 days before it reaches its final stable sync dependant on line distance and line quality. im sorry but you have to be patient with these things and reseting routers and general fiddleing with settings will only do more harm than good.

To be honest Sky are one of the better BB providers around for ADSL and most of the time issue with speed are more down to line quality / line distance or internal wireing than their service.

Ohh and P.S yes im a sky customer have been since November 09 when I moved. have been connected at 18Meg line speed and not a single disconnect and any downtime.

Before this I was with Virgin cable in my old place and seem to spend more time on the phone to technical support because of shody service than actually being online...

Door swings both ways....

P.P.S yes you caught me in a mood but I hate when people give bad advise or just dont have a clue before posting.

agreed with enigma27

Leave your line alone for a week, don't disconnect your router and see what happens at the end of the week.

Personally been with sky for 18 months now - 9mb speed (long way from exchange), happy with that speed, never disconnected, download/upload as much as I want without fear of any letters/capping etc.

£5 a month for the only truely unlimited ADSL connection - very happy man.

been with sky practically since they started doing internet connetions, I get a solid 12Mb connection, and always have.
only downtime was when DSLAM went down in the exchange.
Overal I can't fault them high speed, low cost and truly unlimited. couldn't ask for more.

Sky is great as long as you are not on the Connect package.
Post your line stats and we should be able to work out an approximate final connection rate.

I can't fault them either. I started off with a 4Mbit connection too, after a few days it rose to 16Mbit and then again to 20Mbit. I had to send them an e-mail to get my upload raised from 400kb to 1Mbit as that got stuck for some reason.

Been with them since they came out with internet connections.

You can do some serious downloading with the Sky unlimited package, and I have done in the past and have never had a single e-mail or letter about my usage.

Sucks a little that you are stuck with their choice router but that's easily circumvented by adding your own choice of router after their router deals with the ADSL connection.

If you live many miles from the exchange do not blame Sky, it's BTs wiring that is hampering.

Yup. On Sky the speed will start at 4Mb and gradually increase over the course of about ten days. If you post the line stats from your router, we can guess what speed you're likely to get.

That post is almost as bad as your grammar.

What do you mean by their signal being crap? Their wireless signal? That isn't really anything to do with the actual internet service, is it? That's down to the router being used and the layout of your house.

You can't criticise your 3meg because 'some people' are getting 50meg. You must live a long way from an exchange. That isn't Sky's fault at all. It's the reality of DSL - any provider would be the same.
