Odd question. didn't know where to put it.

we had sky installed several months ago and they insisted the box must be plugged into the phone line. no worries, but its like an adaptor that goes into plug socket with 2 ports. and i was wondering if it was just a splitter or if in fact the whole lil device was a micro filter.

if that makes any sense =/

micro filters are splitters, just under a different name

It is a micro filter, which is not the same as a splitter. They fully separate the POTS and ADSL signals and prevent interference between the two. Both services will work without one, but if you don't use one you will get a poor quality connection and you will be able to hear the ADSL signal while you're on the phone. Other strange things can happen like your phone won't ring or your net cuts off when you dial numbers etc. :)
