Would there be any point to buying a new router (e.g this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-092-BE&tool=3 ) over the default one that came with our sky package. ( Sagem ADSL router Model number F@ST2504) for performance. (surfing net, gaming etc)

In our area we get around 4-6Mps download speed and we have 2 laptops and a desktop All connected to the router (laptops are wireless) along with a ps3 and a itouch.

What about a diff brand then? We just have really bad broadband quality. some one suggested it could be the crappy router than came with the package.

Sagem is not the best provider of routers. Far from it, but they are at least decent which is a lot better than some of the tosh out there.

The first thing I would check if I were in your situation is internal wiring, try switching to higher quality microfilters, check the cabling, remove any equipment from the phone line you do not need or use.

If you are really interested in getting a new higher quality router then Netgear, D-link, Zytel, highish Linksys or if you could - Cisco. Depending on your price range of course:

For a decent model for Netgear I can find is £40 new (exc p+p)

Would the microfiltrs cause jitter? I think thats where im having the mopst problems.

It's entirely possible. The first thing I do in this situation is check the internal wiring, remove any unnecessary equipment from the line and replace the microfilters with higher quality ones. After that if all else fails I try the test socket or if no test socket is available; disable all the internal wiring. And try from the main feed.

ADSL as a technology has many links in the chain (router quality, RJ11 and wire, microfilters, internal wiring, connector quality, EMF interference, loopback speed, B & D channel alignment, quality of the cabling as a whole). If one of these fails or is sub-par for any reason you get a terrible connection. This doesn't even cover outside of your house.

Many links in one chain you need to rule out.

you had me right up untill connector quality lol :( Ill buy a new filter, new rj11 (itsold and a bit too long anyway) and if that fails ill go for a new router. :( hopefully some of that will help it a lil. Cheers :D

Don`t forget that sky hide your username and password. You will need to extract these from your sky router(Google for info on how to do this)
Also sky `can` be funny about people using non sky routers on their BB,just a heads up :)

-_- maybe they should give out a quality router then rather than a cheap bit of plastic that you have to mount (well i have) on a chinchilla cold plate to stop it from melting the carpet where it gets so HOT -_- Lol well good news :D i Think ive fixed the 'jitter' and im getting constant A rateings from ping test website. I changed the ethernet cable. Only problem is my laptops are still haveing ping problems. Their wireless tho with built in wireless cards so its just 'a saga now.' :) Thanks very much guys :D

Just using the Sagem,l believe it has the broadcom chip in it, can't fault it, 3 PC's, 1 PS3 connected to it. No problems at all no matter what we do, on a Sky gamer profile my m8's on 20MB cable my ping in BC2 is usually very close to his. I ping bbc.co.uk now and again and my ping is about 30 which is good, l've heard the new version of the D-LINK router Sky are using is suposed to be better again.

If it's just your wifi devices getting jitter it's possible you've got some wireless interference. Check what other networks are about and what channels they use, try and get as far away from them channel wise as you can.
There's a good wifi analyser app for this on Android if you have a smart phone.

Also quite a simple thing to check is if your router has external antennae, make sure they're not loose or sat with a fish tank between them and the PCs :)

Sagem router is fine - I used my own router for a while but it made no difference whatsoever so sold it and use the standard sky one.

I've got server, main pc, ps3, laptop and 2 phones all connected and it works perfectly well.

Been using the Sagem for 2 years myself & not had a problem with it. Yeah the wireless ain't the best on it but it gets around the house.

Can't say I've had this problem either & mines been on the carpet since the day I've had it. Maybe you have a faulty router?

Try changing the channel the wireless works off too as Skidilliplop said.
