Hey guys, just a question for anyone with Sky, I'm moving to a new house next month, sadly no cable there so am going to think about going with Sky and getting the full tv/broadband/phone(:o) deal, but I've been on cable for so long, I've lost track of good and bad exchange distances etc.. apparently the postcode is 1.6km from exchange, really not sure if this would be fine or possibly butcher the connection down to a studily low speed?

How do people rate Sky on a rule?

was also thinking of o2 broadband as I've got my phone contract with them, so could in theory get unlimited (upto)20mb for £10/mo but I assume you get fleeced for a phone line from them too!

Thanks :)

Personally...

Sky are okay, but I went from Sky to O2 and it's been a far better experience since, almost flawless actually. O2 don't even throttle my downloads, and I download vast amounts of stuff frequently.

If your postcode is 1.6km from the exchange, then you also have to consider that the actual cables wont use the same route along the roads, which is calculated most often.

For example, I'm around 1.2km from the nearest exchange, but I get only 11 Mbps instead of the 20 Mbps calculated. Your new house might have a better connection to the exchange so that's also worth considering.

Now if you went cable, then it would be a different story :p

I've been with Sky for a few years. It may not be the fastest connection ever but you can't argue with the price.

You should get a decent speed with 1.6km, provided the line doesn't go too far out of it's way.

Best guess would be 16Mbit, although the sky site will be far more conservative than that. If you have a poor line it could well be lower.

Thanks for the advice guys, gonna try and get the number of the house tomorrow and do some enquiries :)

Luke, if cable was in that area, I'd have it in an instant! :(

regarding sky, i was with them but i was 2k from the exchange and only received 1.5mb so switched to Virgin. Obviously you can't do this but i'd look into other options and not go with sky due to your distance from the exchange

Not 100% sure how to chck for o2 LLU availablity? :( Still waiting to try and get the current house phone number for some checks etc.. as the estate agents won't give it out without sellers permission due to data protection! :(

If you're moving in soon you could drop into on of your new neighbours to introduce yourself and ask them nicely what their Internet speed is like?

Or get the phone number from the telephone directory and check on BT's web site what sort of line speed they show.

Andi.

Is there a local shop/takeaway nearby that you could get their phone number to run a line test?
Or phone directory enquiries if you know the name of the people who live there?

Sam Knows will tell you if the exchange is O2 LLU enabled.

Magic mate, thankyou :)
