Sky F1 - Get via iPad app for cheap?

Well since Sky signed a deal for half of the F1 races, I've been frantically trying to find a way to watch those races without having to dramatically upend my wallet and shake its entire contents onto the ground, cobwebs and all.

Have I now found the answer?...

A friend has pointed out to me that on the iPad, non-Sky customers can get access to ALL the Sky channels for £9.99 a month, which provides a live stream (SD, not HD) to the iPad. Given that an iPad-HDMI cable isn't exactly a rare item, presumably this gives me a way to watch all the races for £10 a month instead of the £25 a month it would cost me to get the Sky Collection package that I have to fork out for in order to get this channel normally? (I'm on Virgin Media).

Any comments/experiences/observations welcome!

Cheers.

First off it's £9.99 for a Now TV 24 hour Sports pass, OR Sky Sports TV which is techncially an iPhone app and currently £4.99 a month. And as Mr Solo said, no HDMI out.

The other option, which you're not supposed to do, is find someone, possibly an elderly relative who has no use for such a thing and get Sky Go via their account. Still no HDMI out though.

As has been stated above:

  • No HDMI out using the app
  • The £9.99 is for a 24-hour pass, not for a month
  • Sky show all of the races, the BBC only bought the rights to 1/2 of them
  • The season is now already a 1/4 of the way through, you probably should have been thinking about this a while ago?

This is correct, £9.99 for the Day pass let's you watch on a PC (which you can output to a TV) but isn't HD. I don't know how they can justify that price without HD quality, it is watchable SD quality though.

£4.99 gets you a month on the iPhone app, all Sky Sports but the quality is very bad worse than SD. It looks blocky on the iPhone. You can of course run it on an iPad but it's not a native app so with the 2x maginification it looks even worse. You'll struggle to even tell what the cars are, let alone read any timings. The sound also lags a few seconds behind. Sky have deliberately crippled the app to stop people getting it cheap..

Thanks for the feedback guys. My quest to find a way to watch the races at a sensible price continues then!

Find a friend or family member with Sky who really likes you. Get/have laptop, register said laptop as one of their 2/4 device limit.
Watch Sky F1 with HDMI out (possibly give them the tenner)

Thanks for all the comments guys. Really winds me up how much of a bunch of money-grabbers Sky are!

If you were on sky and not virgin media (if things haven't changed) then you'd get sky sports F1 HD with the HD pack (no premium sports pack is required to get that), so it would be how much of a bunch of money grabbers virgin media are since they don't give you that without the rest of the expensive sports channels.

I suspect it's more a case of Sky restricting it as part of the carriage agreement. ;)

Hopefully the NowTV Sports quality is better than the movies. I've seen better quality VCD screeners. It's utterly dire.

When I was still persevering with F1 I ended up using a vpn to connect into Germany then watch on the rtl website & listen via five live. It had adverts though.

I just don't bother with it at all anymore really, and I was the sort of person that would set the alarm for 4am to watch Japanese races and even qualy sessions.

Is it better on the Xbox/PS3 than on the iPad does anyone know? I've used a day pass to watch the football before on an iPad, and thought the quality was actually pretty good.

Makhaira, if you want a free day pass to see what it is like, I have a spare you can have.

I really should get round to seeing what the PS3 app is like :)

well you can get nowtv on ps3 atm @ £1/month for 3 months for movies ... which is great imo . the sport package is not worth it ..... but then again i do half half price sky atm :D
