Could anyone tell me what bandwidth firstly a Sky signal takes up, and secondly a Freeview signal?

Just interested in making a comparison on my dissertation

Cheers

IIRC Sky SD is about 4 to 6 Mbps Sky HD is about 16-20 Mbs. Freeview would be in the same ballpark as Sky SD. Bitrates vary greatly from channel to channel.

The Freeview platform has 6 Multiplexes (shortened to MUXs).

4 of them operate at 16QAM and the other 2 at 64QAM.

A 64QAM multiplex is broadcast at 24Megabits/s.

A 16QAM multiplex is broadcast at 18Megabits/s.

So all in all 100Megabits/s to play with.

I "think" each multiplex is 8mhz but that doesn't sound enough. Each analogue channel is 8Mhz wide. I think there is 390Mhz of bandwidth but only 6 muxes @ 8mhz each (channels 21-68). Therefore, 48Mhz.

Sky is spread over two satellites. Astra 2a and Astra 2d.

Astra 2a has 28 (33Mhz) transponders and Astra 2d has 16 (26Mhz) transponders. 1340Mhz.
