for years i have fed another tv via hdmi and used the rf out to power a magic eye. The new box they sent me has no rf out. Is this for all boxes now or just free ones they send? what do people with no rf out use to switch channels from another room without paying for multi room?

sky+ app works really well, and you can do it from anywhere within range of the router.

box needs to be connected to the router though either by ethernet or using a wireless connecor

You could use a wireless infra red remote extender device. I used a one and it worked brilliantly and saved having to run 30M of coax. It was about £30. Worked through 2 walls and 20 Metres. I believe their wireless band is around 400MHz so of course travels further and better than 2.4GHz signals.

Edit: It is the Marmitek pyramid type which currently sells for around £25.

A friend had the same issue but I was there when they was swapping it and said to the engineer he needs it so he switched it after a few grumbles and stating his boss has to give him the go ahead.

You should contact them say your not happy (only issue is they may have to give you refurb).

The non rf models used to be for multi room only but they have just got new batch in which they are giving out no rf but wireless built in.

New HD boxes have wifi built in but no RF connection. An RF adapter will be available from sky.com/accessories later this month though it will be chargeable.

but the ap is no remote replacement

it's better

you can use it as a tv guide, remote record, as well as change the channels, pause, rewind, etc, etc.

in fact i use the app more than i do the remote.

it has highlights for the day (best shows on that day), shows similar programmes to the ones your watching and when they are on.

it also tells you all the different viewings for a programme so you can record the ones at 2am, etc so you can record something else during the day, etc.

also has a brilliant search function as well, can search by actor, director or name of tv show or movie, etc.

the remote is now a thing of the past.

How is it better you can do all that stuff with magic eye?

As I said we don't all live in houses with cardboard walls so wireless isn't an option for lot of people also I think you have missed the point people use rf to run cable to another tv set how does your wonderful sky app give people the tv program on their tv it doesn't

it doesn't show you similar programmes, it does't show you daily highlights, etc, etc.

for people with thick walls or large houses, you can use homeplugs, wireless extenders, or a combination of both. you can even use cabling to a wireless access point, etc, too.

the point was about how the sky+ app > remote

if you want sky in another room, then rather than running a shoddy rf cable to it, you can run a hdmi through a splitter which again is much better than RF.

RF is old tech, new tech is out now which is far better

I find it funny how you rate rf as shoddy you must not understand it there is analog and digital sky of course use analog or did in the boxes when they could have put a digital one in the box so people would get hd but they are all about $$$$

Because something is new doesn't always make it better or being old doesn't mean it's useless the coax used with rf is far better then hdmi and your other methods also cheaper.

I think the point about losing the RF socket is very valid, and for several reasons.

  • What about folk who already have their homes wired for Sky on RF2 + magic eyes? A replacement box with no RF-out stops the rest of their system working as it did
  • The Sky remote is a great piece of design. It works well. Many can use it by feel alone. This is particularly useful for those with long sight. Not so the app.
  • Sometimes you just want to change channel. The existing remote is simple, quick and convenient to use. It gives exactly the same user experience as being sat in front of the main TV; That familiarity is important to a lot of people
  • Not everyone has (or wants) a smartphone

The UK is moving away from analogue RF. Many small TVs that go in to kitchens and bedrooms no longer have an analogue RF tuner. It's obvious that as manufacturers look to cut costs on larger sets too that the days of the analogue tuner are numbered. After all, we have already seen the demise of analogue stereo out on TVs which would be incredibly useful for connecting the soundbars that are so desperately needed with today's TVs.

Fortunately there is a solution. There's the Triax Tri-Link which replicates the RF output feature and also provides magic eye control of any device, not just Sky boxes.

The app doesn't really replace your Sky remote anyway, there's plenty you can't do from the app that you do need the remote for. Far more convenient to just use the remote to quickly pause, rewind etc than unlock a phone/tablet, open the app, wait for it to launch, navigate to the controls and then do what you need to do.
