If I upgrade from Sky+ to HD, and then after 1-12 months cancel the HD subscription, what will/will not work on the Sky HD box?

I assume I can still watch and record all the SD channels (I pay for), and watch and record just the free HD channels?

I have a Sky HD box, but with no active subscription, I get still get BBC HD, BBC One HD, ITV HD, Channel 4 HD, and Five HD. Since you've still got a subscription, I'd assume you'd still be able to record and play the above HD channels as well as the SD ones.

Can you record those free HD channels you still get?

Just call them up, when my free HD (12 months) ran out, I rang up to cancel it and got offered another 12 months free. I think they have quite a bit of flexibility with it, presumably because it won't be charged in the not too distant future.

I can't record anything, Sky being as tight as they are turn off recording capabilities if you cancel with them, despite the recording capabilities being completely hardware...

Confused? So you're not paying anything to Sky?

In my scenario, I'd still be paying my twenty odd pounds for some subscribed channels, just not the £10.25 for any HD ones? I'd assume in this scenario I'd get some free HD channels, and be able to record them too!?

Your box will behave in the same way as it does now, other than the loss of the fee paying HD versions of channels.

Hi Neil,
I'm in the same position as you. I cancelled my HD package a while ago which means you go down to the basic £19.50 per month SD package. I can still watch and record all the channels I pay for (e.g. Sky 1 etc) and the only thing I have "lost" are the HD channels. TBH, I've never even noticed the loss. I have, however, noticed the financial benefits. :)

Well, I've ordered the 1TB HD package. So for the next 12 months I'm paying £10.25...

It may well be before a years up, Sky reduce the cost or remove it? In which case I'd hope they're not silly about the 12 months contract!?

I'm on the usual Sky+ SD contract, which I've had just over two years now.

Really wish I'd gone for a HD package as the box was free, now if I want one it appears you have to buy it outright for a good deal of money. Otherwise you pay for the HD subscription plus multi-room sub to have a new box.

I was wondering whether I can just buy a HD box second hand? Would my SD sub card work in it & allow the same viewing & recording but with the free to air HD channels?

Personally I just cannot watch SD content these days.
I'd say that 99% of what I watch is thankfully either HD or upscaled.
When I'm forced to watch SD it just does look so poor.

Yer I know we soped with it for long enough, but not there is an alternative I won't be going back - even to save £10 a month.

What do you mean when you're talking about upscaled viewing? Surely any SD stuff you watch is implicitly being upscaled?

Random Sky related question:

How long do I have to commit to sky sports? I only want it for rugby league, so would I be able to unsubscribe once the season ends and re-subscribe when the season starts?

You can cancel sports whenever you like unless you've signed up to a specific deal which requires a minimum term.

Something to watch out for is when you cancel your HD subscription, any programs you have stored in your planner that have come from the Sky HD channels, will be locked out so you wont be able to watch them.

Although be warned that you have to give 31 days notice to cancel, so if you subscribe you'd probably have to call them straight back to cancel to give enough notice to just have it for the one month.

Is that a new thing? The last time I called to cancel a package it was done instantly.

I thought the one month notice only applied to cancelling your Sky contract altogether.
