Hi,

I have Sky HD running on a Samsung 50" 1080p Plasma TV.

Im thinking of ditching the Sky HD box and building myself a little HTPC with a satellite card.

Would it be able to pull all the HD channels i get on sky on the HTPC? Also will the HD quality and SD quality be as good, not as good or same as the Sky HD box?

Cheers

Matt

Hi,

If im paying for sky anyway and just wanting to use my subscription through a computer and not a sky hd box then how would i be breaking the law?

I would still be paying for sky after all

Matt

I think its something to do with the way sky charge for their subscriptions, for example having sky on your PC, is like opening up "Multi-Room", except much harder for them to regulate.

Hence it is not officially supported.

You can get a satellite card however, and watch all the freesat channels.

There are guides to this on other forums I believe. SkyPlayer is hardly a substitute for the HD Sports and Movies, it also requires multiroom to watch the live channels.

also you can use your current STB and use a HD capture card (aver and black gold have them)...this will take the HDMI feed from your box into your PC. Using an IR blaster and MC remote Media Centre will change your box's channel for you from within media centre.

a lot of HDCP will allow you to record but will lock it to single machine there are ways out there to remove it but would probably be illegal. As for using a cam and DVB S2 card, it's still to be decided if it's illegal or not...with Virgin it is but with Sky it's a bit of a grey area.

Yeah last time I looking into using something like an Intensity Pro HDMI card the HDCP had to be stripped away. Certainly not as straight forward as directly connecting a capture card and you may well loose the DD5.1 as well. A satellite card works, is a lot easier and cheaper, the only problem with the DVB-S2+CAM is having to put the Sky card back in the connected STB occasionally, not a big deal really. Unless he has an old component HD box?

For crying outloud...why am i gonna pay a ridiculous price to get sky's channels in SD only and zero HD? And if you're thinking they'll add it...nope, according to sky there no plans for HD through skyplayer...it's a F£$%&*#g ripoff.

... and even if they did support it, will the average home have a connection quick enough to support HD? No. Calm down.
