Hi all, So I'm getting a Sky Broadband ADSL package and their usual Hub router which wi-fi is 2.4ghz only and not AC standard.

I'm also getting a Steam Link and want to use it for gaming. I'd like to get everything sorted to game wirelessly via the Steam Link, so I think I'm going to need either 1. a new AC router, and use the hub as a modem only, 2. a new AC Modem/Router.

What's the best option, why and by what measure? (cost vs. speed and stability are my areas of concern). Thanks :)

Any modem/router combo you purchase will have to support MER to be used with Sky fibre :).
He's using Sky ADSL :)

As far as I'm aware you will need a modem/router combo unit to work on the ADSL line. The TP-Link modem/router you have selected should be fine for what you want however I would invest in an ASUS modem/router if my budget was £100+ as (In my case anyway) ASUS have a better track record of providing good routers. Also the ASUS will work on a fibre VDSL line if you ever decide to upgrade.

As far Sky Unlimited being bad I think the majority of the time it depends on your area as all providers offer roughly the same speeds at different prices. You choose more based on customer service than anything else :)

Don`t forget that you need to extract the username and password from your new sky router if you want to use a different /non sky/router :)

How do you extract the username and password from the Sky router (is this for the hub itself or the Sky broadband account)?

I think you need to use an app called wireshark on these latest hubs to get the info as sky won`t give it to you

Also make sure you can get sky llu from your exchange.this means that sky have their own equipment in place,so you do not get your sky package via bt equipment

Sorry, not familiar witht the terminology or technology here, how do I do that and what does it mean exactly?

go to the samknows website enter in your details, your exchange etc see what providers are there, you are looking for sky LLU

All good then:)
You should be connected to sky gear at the exchange and get upto 22meg down.how fast have they said you can get?

13-20mbps I think it was. We've lives at the same address previously on the same exact package and were getting more like 9meg down though so I take it with a pinch of salt.

I was with sky for 5 years +
Mostly using my own router as it had more control, things like better wifi, dual band and snr adjustment
LLU gave me a slightly higher synch rate compared to a BT isp
Just moved to plusnet to reduce my bill as sky offered me peanuts to stay, synch is slightly slower than the LLU connection i used to have
