I live between two places.

Location 1: I have vDSL (80/20) via Plusnet and I have a BT Openreach modem with an ASUS RT-AC68U router using Merlin firmware. The set up is great, I get great wireless coverage, the uptime is great and I use the OpenVPN feature quite a lot on it.

Location 2: standard ADSL2+ and I have a Sky SR102 router. To put it frankly, it is a POS and needs replaced. Wireless coverage is very poor. It is limited to the 2.4GHz band and struggles to cover a rather small flat. The contract runs until next year, so changing provider at the moment is out of the question. I assume I can extract the username and password quite easily from the router, what are my next options?

Option 1- Keep the Sky SR102, get something like the ASUS RT-AC68U or the Apple Airport Extreme and put the new router in access point mode
Option 2- Replace the Sky SR102 with a dedicated modem (any recommendations?) and use either the ASUS or the Apple router as above
Option 3- Get an all in one solution that works with Sky ADSL

In an ideal world, I'd get the ASUS DSL-AC68U, but with the very poor reviews, I'm inclined to ignore that option.

I'm tempted to go for either option 1 or 2 but what are your thoughts?

The issues with the DSL-AC68U only related to VDSL and not ADSL, so you could still get it but if the username and password can't be extracted from the hub then you can still get it and move your RT-AC68U to the sky connection and use the DSL-AC68U for your VDSL connection since the issues that affected it are no longer there (according to a review over on the main site) as long as you have the most recent firmware.

Tplink TD-W9980 works with both ADSL and VDSL on Sky.

Newest firmware works fine with sky fibre pro. dual band, decent coverage of my house etc.

One box solution.
