Sky Hub (SR102) & RT-AC68U setup - how does this sound?

Just over your shoulder
So, just moved house and left behind a lovely quick VM cable connection, which I ran through the SoooperHub in modem only mode and into my AC68U router.
Can't get Virgin where we now are, so have gone with Sky Fibre, which means the latest Sky Hub (SR102)......but I want to be able to use my AC68U.

So, I am thinking the best route (without additional purchase of dedicated modem etc.) is to chuck the ACC68U in the SR102's DMZ and then turn off DHCP and wifi on the Sky Hub, letting my AC68U do the routing.
Plan is to run a cable from the Sky Hub to the AC68U (WAN) - likely going to be a powerline connection as I want the AC68U more centrally, and not next to the current socket - and then let the AC68U take on all routing duties.

Not being a networking guru, is this the way forward?

I'd leave the SR102 to do everything except Wi-Fi and configure the RT-AC68U as an access point.

Hhhmm, I did think of this, but I also want the Torrent server and few other features. TBH, I think the wifi is the most important thing though, as I want to run multiple networks - dedicated 5GHz AC network for a handful of devices, a legacy WEP one for a very old piece of kit, and then alternatives for various devices.
The other part of the idea is that the AC68U can be squirreled away somewhere with a NAS drive and a media server attached (wired), as where the fibre connection comes in is not really suitable.

From what I heard the Sr102 doesn't have bridge mode. I have the same router, and just use the bt - fiber modem straight into my wan. However you'll need to use wireshark to get your username and password.

I picked up an Openreach modem - a Huawei HG612 - when I replaced the SR102 with a Time Capsule. As Furyus says, using Wireshark to extract your details from the SR102, which are different to the Sky ADSL details if you previously used that.

Thanks all, some tinkering to take place at the weekend, else may look into grabbing a modem

What's the difference in that open reach modem you have? I have the standard one the BT engineer gave me when my sky fiber was installed.

The one I have has a custom firmware available that allows you to get your line stats and a few other bits, but apart from that, it's just known to be pretty solid and both cheap and easily available on fleabay. :)

OK, all sorted.
SR102 on regular duty, and then the AC68U sat in the SR102's DMZ. AC68U features all seem to be working just fine - i.e. media server, torrent repository (with attached USB HDD) and multiple networks over the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Rather than faff with Powerlines, I placed the AC68U next to the SR102 and job done - for now, the SR102 acts as the wireless connection for the Sky+ box, and everything else runs from the Asus' wireless, as I get notably better range and speed.

Thanks for the input, forumites :)

Hey mate, sorry to resurrect this thread and I don't know if you're still running the same set up as before but there's a new revision of this router out - Obviously by popular demand.

The ASUS DSL-AC68U - It features an ADSL/VDSL modem. I just set one of these up for my mate on Sky ADSL also, and it works like a charm. I just used the old User/Pass Wireshark capture and dropped it in. Haven't even done any MAC spoofing.

Like you, I have the same set up at home. I have the SR102 set-up with absolutely everything disabled and a DMZ set up to the AC68U. It works great, apart from the fact that the SR102 is using up a valuable plug socket and electricity. Also - If you're unaware, there is an upgrade tool for our current routers which overclocks the RAM from 533MHz to 666MHz.

If you're really sneaky, you could probably brick your current router using that tool and then claim it stopped working - within warranty - and try trade it in for a repair, but just buy the DSL version in stead! :)

So are there no dropouts or loss of speed and which firmware is the asus using with your m8's setup, I assume without using the sagem?
