Sky internet and sporadic speeds

Hey Guys,

Recently had Sky broadband installed - and the speeds seem very sporadic.

Also when I say sporadic, I don't mean they are up and down all the time, I mean for certain apps and downloading things it is mentally fast and others it's just "meh"

For example:

Newsgroups - Downloading is alright, about 500 - 700 KBps
Safari - Ok - about 300 - 500 KBps
iTunes (Podcasts) - 1.06MBps

Why is it iTunes podcasts (coming off of a server much like Newsgroups are) are so much faster than anything else?

Also on speedtests it says it's a 5.7Mbit connection! Doesn't add up to me!

are there any ports and such I can open or settings to change to speed this up?

Can I ask are you on adsl max (upto 8mb) or adsl2+ (upto 16mb)?
How far are you into using skys services?

You can only download what the upload service is like at the other end. For example Newsgroups might have a better upload connection, so it would explain the fast speeds.

I am on skybroadband adsl2+ and I get the same.

DownStream Connection Speed 12683 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 764 kbps

ADSL2+ then?

NGs should be faster as I use the same service as my friends and they manage to hit over 1MB a sec easy (on Virgin cable etc)

It depends of your source of connection though.

ADSL2+ yes. Why don't you do a speed test?

Goggle speedtest. This will max out your connection and test it with high upstream rates from the speedtest server.

I mentioned in my first post that I did a speed test and it reckoned it was a 5.7Mb connection.
