Currently im paying £30 for an 8mb line with 40Gb limit peak, and no limit off peak, and very happy with the service and good pings on games.

However my exchange has just been unbundled for Sky/Easynet and I am able to get upto 16Mb.

The question is, is it worth the swap being that I should be able to get the sky for £26 package along with it.

But not sure on Sky as an ISP, also do you have to use their router or can you use another one?

Cheers

Kimbie

You will get a 'free' preconfigured wireless router and its part of the terms that you should use it, however its possible you will geet or can extract your password etc and use an existing compatible router.

Sky as an ISP seems to get a very varied response.

I am currently checking out sky and BE There as both are LLU enabled on my exchange, BE seem to be well rated as an ISP at the moment, £16 pm for a service thats currently costing me £25

Big bucks (£110 ish) discounts availble on sky packages that virtually wipe out the cost of getting a sky + box!!

What are the line stats from your router at the moment as the upto 16Mb is exactly that UPTO also do you have an idea of how much usage you do a month as the Sky service is subject to a FUP.

I dont have my stats to hand but I sync at over 8000 and download at 750Kb/sec so I see no reason why I will not get the full 16.

The max Sky package, is not subject to any limits and the FUP does not seem to apply to or make any notes of bandwidth usage

If you are syncing at the full 8mb on BT Max then you should get 16Mb+ on the Sky service.

As far as limits they do not publish a download limit but it is subject to a FUP which does nto state the limits either, so if you expect to normally download hundreds of gigs a month they will be in contact with you.

Sky's FUP is supposedly 250 gb/m, been tempted to check them out myself of late as I sync at max speeds on 8mb zen currently so hopefully would see 16 out of sky. The one thing making me hesitate are the pings which I hear aren't too amazing with sky.

im with sky and there an ok isp had problems for the first month but after they sorted
out my local exchange its ran fine now. if you want more info on sky use this site
http://www.skyuser.co.uk/

im 0.80km from my local exchange and i connect at around 13.7mbs to 14mbs from the 16mbs, but if you ring them up they will give you a ruff guide on what you should be getting. when i called them they told me i would get about 14mbs so there guess was right..

not every 1 who as tried sky likes them tho. but im happy with them for now.

Where can I find these discounts?? Will be singing up for Sky in the next month or so, the whole lot, TV, Talk and Broadband.

I went from BT 8mb > Sky 8mb > Sky 16mb and live about 0.5 miles from my exchange.

Before BT messed about with their speed I used to get 6.5, which stayed the same when I first moved to Sky, online game pings were 10-25.

The when I upgraded to Sky's 16mb package, my online gaming pings rose to the mid 50's. My connection stats are,

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15323 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 18.0 db 10.7 db
Noise Margin 12.4 db 13.5 db

All in all good value for money at £10 pcm IMO.

yea JackRegan my gaming pings up on there 16mbs connection. but all in all
im happy with it and for a 10er a month i cant moan :)

i was told as long as you don't hammer the connection a lot a peek hours. ie do loads of
downlonading at peek times sky are ok with it. and as for the max bandwidth ppl are saying
its around 300gig a month. tho know 1 knows for sure

sky are good from what i have seen, good speeds, cs isnt too bad.

pings are rubbish.

the router you get is also good.

Been with sky for 2 months now i've got 16mb and download just over 1.65mb.

Though i did have to put my router into the test socket behind the master socket due to poor wiring in the house.

But i can't fault it and the rumours of FUP of 250gig a month is more than enough for me though i'm on around 170gig atm.

My pings to CSS servers are around 30/40.

I'm pleased i joined them.

I have the 16meg package, sync at around 12.5mbit and download at 1.3meg/sec.
The default (netgear) router seems fine, although I do have to reset it every couple of months or so.

No idea about caps, some FUP letter got sent out recently but I've never got into trouble. No idea how much bandwidth I use a month, if I had to guess around 25-75gig.

Pings are atrocious due to interleaving, around 38ms or thereabouts to good servers for me. Makes me long for my old ISDN line when it comes to gaming!

well I signed up a few hours back.. paying £17 a month for "8mb" on tisclai and getting 2mb. So I've gone for 16mb on sky because they insisted their info showed my line was capable of at least 8 to 16mb.

Tiscali have been utterly rubbish anyway but inertia has kept me there, it was actually a cold call from sky today that did the business.. I figure for £10 a month I'm £5 better off and I might get 16mb rather than 2mb. If I get it and it tests at much under 10mb I'll switch down to the 8mb in my cooling off period (already agreed) and save myself £10 a month and for that I'll be happy with the 2mb I get now.

And a free router to offset the cost of the "connection" fee, I'll get £20 for my dlink if I can't reconfigure it and sell the netgear.

Fingers crossed! It'll only be my 3rd ISP, AOL then tiscali then SKY.... the first move was an awesome move forwards so hopefully this will be another. Pings mean nothing to me as I don't game online.
