Just had a second box fitted now Sky tell me I have to have both phone lines plugged in?
The problem is I unplugged the phone cable for the old box years ago and don’t know what type it was does anybody know the type and were I can get one?

Thanks

I believe it's just a normal modem cable that you'd use with a 56k modem, RJ11 IIRC. Can't say where you can get one from as it'd breach the competitor rule though.

yeah its just an RJ11.

Old box doesn't need to be connected anymore, they only need to be connected for the first year, got sky multiroom here and only have the box upstairs connected to the phoneline as its under a year old, never had the box downstairs connected for years. :)

if you have multiroom you have to have all the boxes connected to the telephone line, its the way sky make sure you and a mate arn't sharing one subscription in two different houses, sky get the box to ring them in the early hours and check the number it is connected to.

I tried disconnecting my box after a year and got snotty letters, when I rang them they said it was in the terms and conditions, when I said I wasn't happy they said tuff, like it or leave.

as for the cable, as has been said it's just a standard RJ11 cable, if your is lost a well known auction site has loads of them.

doggo

Got it sorted now used a modem cable one with only two strands of wire connected to each end of the plugs, was trying one with four each end that would not work

Yes Sky says I have to them both connected at all time.

Thanks

Yeah they do test it in the early hrs of the morning now and again, all the letters say is the box is not connected so can we attempt a call back to make sure its not faulty, so i just pop the line back in do the call back and bobs your uncle, once it done out it comes again, and so the cycle continues. :D

So why not just leave it plugged in?

As the box downstairs is the old type, and they are notorious for freezing etc... which ours used to do loads of times till we took the phoneline out, its because those old box's can't handle the speed of the updates so will freeze, crash etc..., and Sky want £50 for a new box which they aint getting, they should give us a new one for free as the subscriptions £50 odd a month, and we've had Sky since its started, so the least they can do is give us a free box worth 1x months subscription when we've paid thousands to em, and are continuing to pay thousands to em. :D

The phone line's not used for updates. Updates come via the satellite.

The phone line is used for callbacks and ordering films. That's about it.

Well i don't really know tbh, thats what i was told by a mates dad whos a satellite engineer and does the sky installations, i phoned him about it and he said thats why, and to just unplug it as the old boxes are known for it, either way its never crashed, frooze for months now, and when the phoneline was connected it was a couple of times a day sometimes, so the phoneline being connected must have had some affect on it. :)

Just don't see why we should pay £50 for a new box from them when the subscriptions about that a month, they should give you a new one for free, if not then they would lose out on thousands if we stopped it, whereby they would only be losing £50 if they gave us a new box. :D

surly £50 is a mere drop in the ocean to someone who has a sig saying "loadsamoney"

call them up and threaten to cancel your subscription then u'll be offered some FREE months, if it doesnt work cancel anyway then get it reinstalled with a NEW box ;)

I didnt bother with Sky multiroom maybe im a tightwad? well no maybe not as i dont spare on my pc parts but paying an extra £10 per month to have sky in another room sounds like a lot to me thats £120 a year just for the privelege - instead I bought a digial tv sender off the popular auction site for about £25. It basically works by transmitting the picture and sound from the main Sky box (it plugs into the SCART out and the SCART from the tv plugs into this) to another TV set in the house and also transmitting the remote control signals back to the Skybox to change channels etc. It works really well despite the occasional breif interruption, although not crystal sharp clear images its good enough for me (i still watch VCR tapes lol - those are the black boxes your parents used to watch movies on instead of DVD's for the youngsters :p)

I can see why this would become a problem if you had more people wanting to watch different channels in the same house but id solve that problem by having a pecking order for who watches what first - like it used to be done.

I wholly agree with The Deuce above if we all turned around and boycotted them for having extortionate prices they would have to back down and lower them.

It is, but thats not the point, 1x months subscription is about £50 odd, they say the boxes are £50, so thats about 16x years ive been on Sky, 1x box is a months subscription, so 12x boxes a year have been paid for, over 16x years is about 192 boxes ive bought, so they can definately spare 1x. :D

Done all the above, threatened to cancel etc... its an ongoing saga at the minute, i want a box for nowt, simple as that, or they can stick it. :D
