Just about to order sky as theres a good offer going of first 4 months half price.

Anyway is it correct that the box they give you is only covered under warranty for the first 12months and after that if it goes wrong you have to pay for repair or replacement?

Also what are the current boxes that you get like, are they reliable?

Many thanks :)

Thats true about the warranty situation, but dont worry about it, they are reliable, and even if it does go wrong then they are very very cheap to buy second hand from ebay.

4 months half price is interesting though, time to quit and sign up again methinks :)

You can take out an extended warranty as well if its of any interest to you??

The 4 months half price offer is only if you take up any package with a Sky + box if you dont & only take a normal box then its only 2 months half price.

No its not mate its 4 months free even if you don't have Sky + ;)

Ok I stand corrupted ;)

Just checked & your right It was the other way round when I was looking into it a while back...honest :p

I'm only taking the 4 variety mix option when I move out in a couple of weeks, which means I have to pay £10 extra a month for a Sky + box robbing gits :(

My sky packed up on Friday was on tech support for 20min and they decided its either my box or dish (he coming today :) ), as for the cost of an engineer coming out its £65 and that will cover the cost if needed a new box, dish, lnb and cable. Thats with mine being out of warrenty as ive had mine 6yrs and this is the 1st problem ive had

Anywho theres a little bit of info about the warrenty/costs for you

I would just phone a local installer.

The sky setup is actually quite simple and the only bit which is tricky is aligning the dish, I have managed to do it through trial and error but ideally you would want a sat meter.

But things like borrowing a mates Sky box and plugging that in to see if thats at fault is easy to do.

3 common factors are:

Broken Box - Power Supply or Tuner
Broken LNB
Water/Moisture in the Coax cablig resulting from a shoddy install.

Personally I wouldn't bother with insurance. I think it's about £70 per year.

Our sky setup is 5years old now. Last year the LNB decided to pack up so it cost about £50 to get a chap to replace it, parts and labour.

At the moment I am trying to win my parents a new Sky box for around £40 from Ebay as there's is slow, old and unstable.

I would say most problems can be cured for less than £70 if you DIY.

There is nothing to really go wrong with the dish other than it moving, you could probably buy a LNB, box and some coax for <£70 tbh.

They have an insurance scheme. £6 per month gets you parts /labour for just about any eventuality.

Had to use it twice in six years
You have averaged £216 per call out in that case.

Sky have done well out of you!

:p :p They phoned me to offer me this the other day. obviously i explained to them just what a rip off it is and hung up straight away after some abuse about taking me for a fool, you do realise how cheap sky equipment is? You could replace a whole system for less than £30 off ebay. As Tesla says, you have averaged a huge sum per call out.

ebay is great for sky kit- quad lnbs for £15 etc, as is satcure.

I usually get a guy in to align dishes now, easier than arsing about on a ladder all morning plus the guy I know does them for £20 cash for me.
Yes, Sat meters are not that cheap so unless your doing loads then stick with the £20 method.

Lol well the sky man has been and gone he figured out its a problem with both my box and dish.... the problem is he wont fix the dish as he was the wrong engineer sent for the job.. he is not allowed to go on my roof so they had to rebook it for next monday

Anyone want to look on there sky planner for me and see if there is a repeat of nip/tuc monday or later please :) i know there was a repeat yesturday, today and i think friday

I bought a satellite signal meter from ****** for £19.99 about 5 years ago, it is very basic with just a needle which shows the strength of signal fed from an LNB, but it works and i have sky dish'es aligned in less than 5 mins with it. It wont differentiate between satellites, but its so sensitive that you can literally just sweep the sky with the dish until you get one. As long as you sweep pointing roughly south then you'll hit 28.2 within the first couple of fluctuations :)
