Sky Offer 75% for a year

There's a thread in home Cinema by myself offering a friends and family deal of 50% off for new customers if anyone wants to ask me for a code? Must be a new customer, nothing for existing ones.

What annoys me about Sky Deals is that they ignore the actual loyal customer base.....for example, a New 1TB skyHD box is £49 for new customers, yet someone like myself who is a long time customer, subscribes to premium services including multi room and is usually an adopter of new services such as HD gets shafted with old tech or has to spend full retail for upgrades and has to wait months extra for software upgrades...such as the new EPG.

Sky need to sort out their prioties tbh, particularly with Virgin TiVo getting better by the minute.

Ful retail for a 1TB box is £399. You won't pay that. You can get a 1TB box from sky for £164. That price doesn't tie you into a contract so sky could lose money a week after you receive the box. They have to consider that.

Also, you got a discount on your first HD box. So does a new customer now.

Sky is a business. Why should they give deals to customers who could leave tomorrow when a new customer is contracted for a year? It's assured income, therefore worth subsidising.

I didn't get a discount on my first/second HD boxes...I paid full price for them as I was one of the first to own one (£199 each plus installation)(I was also for years charged 2 HD subs as well as a multi room sub), also I was told only today that I could buy the 1TB box for £149 (as opposed to the full retail of £249, rather than £399) although if I was an existing customer without multi room Or HD I could have had one for £49,On top of that I had to pay installation costs which were twice that of a new installation, £60 to hook up a few cables...pfft, including being charged a reduced fee if I wanted to install it myself!!!! If I subscribe to a premium service I should at least recieve premium service, something Sky should take onboard given the growth in competition to those premium services. I wouldn't mind being tied into a further 12 month contract as if I were a new customer either, incidently just like SkyHD does for existing Sky+ subscribers.

Essentially I am being punished for contributing to the success of their roll out of new services such as SkyHD and Multiroom. That's a great way to treat your premium customer base.

And you are right, Sky is a business, whose continuing success and profitability is predicated on the subscriptions it's existing customers pay, particularly those, like me who pay in excess of £70 p/mth for premium services (TV only).

I realise that you work for Sky and frankly given your last response and the attitude it implies toward existing customers by the company itself I am feeling more inclined toward Virgin as we speak. At least the TiVo is free and there is no supplements for HD and Multiroom is cheaper, and it doesn't matter that I am an existing customer (I have my broadband with them) I get the same 6 months half price subscription and another 1TB TiVo box for £99, the same as if I were a new customer to Virgin. I can also access the Sky content I use through their services. Hmmm.

In fact it may well be significantly cheaper in the long term as it would mean a single bill for Phone/Internet/TV as opposed to my current three. Deserves further investigation if nothing else.

None of this is aimed at you personally Mischief, only at the company itself, so please do not take any offense or feel that I am having a go at you, I am not.

........has anyone shifted to Virgin from Sky?

I only have Sky because I got a half price discount through a sky employee.

Once that ends I'll be dropping to the bare minimum or haggling. I can't justify £65~ a month :/

I've just re read this thread and was surprised when I saw you posted - I was even more surprised (shocked) when I saw how much you're paying Sky.

I know this - I used to work for them (on the broadband/tech side of things - but let's not go there ) I genuinely cannot understand why anybody would pay them £60/70+ PCM for a service that provides you with 20 minutes of adverts every hour (usually promoting themselves) and then ***** over their own user base (I hate that term) that is contractually obliged to pay XYZ amount PCM for the the remaining term of their contract. Is it any wonder pirate (you don't need names) and legitimate (Netflix etc etc) sources are flourishing given the greed these companies have?

The very first HD box had a price of £399 if you didn't take a HD subscription. That means you did get a discount. :)

I agree that the £10 extra for each Multiroom HD subscription was bad and was very happy when it stopped.

Sky is looking into tying existing customers into new 12 month contracts in return for box upgrades but I haven't heard anything concrete yet.

What i can't really understand about Virgin is that people are willing to pay for a device that they will never own and Virgin will take back if you leave them, effectvely leaving you with nothing you ever recorded. At least your Sky box is yours with your recordings on it, although I'm aware you can't play any of them without subscribing again.

Virgin may not charge extra for 'most' HD channels but I believe if you want Sports or movies in HD there is an extra charge? Don't forget Virgin also insist on 18 month contracts right now.

As for the charge per month at one point I was 'forced' to pay for my Sky TV and still pay for my Line Rental. I didn;t have HD or movies at that time and only took Sports for the last few months before I got it discounted again. No way would I have the full package if I didn't get it free.

As for having a go at me, i get it all the time as soon as some find out I work for Sky. No worries mate :)

What it means is that if I did not take a subscription I would have been penalised, not that I got a discount as the subscription would have added to the cost anyway. And besides my point still stands as only a few months after the early adopters took on HD, Sky reduced the costs of it HD boxes for new HD subscribers to £49. Something we complained about and was told to effectively sod off.

Quite, although we had to request (demand) the reduction as that again initially only applied to New Subscribers.

They do it already for pretty much anyone except the Premium Subscribers, which is my issue with the service they offer,

Virgin do not charge you for the HD boxes or for your first TiVo box, they are rented, just like most Cable Services. It is a different business model from that that Sky employs. Owning the Sky Box and the recordings on it is a bit of a misnomer as you have pointed out, you cannot access the recording anyway without a subscription.

You pay for the premium channels, just as you do you for Sky. However it is the "extra" subscriptions such as Multiroom and HD that you do not pay extra for. Overall it appears that Virgin is substantially cheaper than Sky for the same level of service provision. Aside from that is the fact that they appear to treat Premium Subscribers with a little more respect and offer them the same deals as New Subscribers in regards to accessing new services or equipment.

I do not mind paying for the service I want, I do however balk at paying more than other existing customers or new customers for upgrades and installation.

I am not one of those people. My issues are entirely with Sky Policy, not with you. :)

I've currently got the HD package with 1 HD box and a normal sky+ multi room box.
Since they have dropped the extra £10 fee for hd multi room could i replace the normal sky+ box with a 1TB sky+HD box for £164? I assumed it would be a lot more than this

Anyone had any success being offered discounts when phoning to cancel? Spoke to them yesterday but they didn't seem bothered.

Maybe it depends on how you go about it. If you wing it a bit and say you can't afford/justify the price anymore, therefore you'd like to cancel, they might try to coerce some deals down your neck.

If you just flat out say I'm out, then they might not try the deals.

I've been a Sky Customer for a few years now, currently on 75% off and NEVER paid full price. They always seem to offer me something new that makes it worthwhile.

As its a swap for a sky+ then there is a good chance they will. Log on to sky.com/mysky and look at your options.

Once the box is fitted you can swap it to your big tv if you want, sky won't care.

How did you get 75% off?

I went OOA, so cancelled down my sky. They sent me an email with like 75% off, some free credit etc. So yep, why not paying something like £20 a month for the full HD package.

I'll be cancelling soon though, its not even worth £20 a month.

Finally managed to kick sky in january wasnt paying £50+ a month for tv , missus whinged a bit though as she was missing her sky living.
Folded yesterday and took them up on the 75% off deal for a year , £24 movies/sports & sky+.
Dont know what the £50 credit is though , presume i dont pay anything for 2 months.

How long were you OOA\cancelled before you got the 75% offer?

I had fully cancelled in May this year, was down to a basic package by then to try and trim some household costs, then decided to stop it for good, rang them up to cancel they offered the norm 20% off for 3 months, then kept on getting letters with 50% off for 6 months i still refused, then the 75% popped in the letter box for 12 months:) couldn't get them to discount a HD pack though they still charge full wack for this. i shall never pay £65 a month for sky again it's just a money pit. so i'm happy for 12 months paying £22.12.
