Sky Q - loss of signal arrrrrrgh

This is the second Sky Q box i've had with the same issue. It used to work fine up to just before christmas. There's no pattern to this which makes it very hard to diagnose. I've got a LG 4k tv, Xbox One S and Sony bluray player connected.

Usually, when you switch the tv on either via tv remote or via the sky remote there will be no signal received from Sky. The only guaranteed way I can get it to work is to pop the HMDI cable in and out of the Sky box.

There is no apparent pattern to this, and it is really frustrating. What's more when the Sky engineer appeared before we couldnt rectify the fault which is just typical, but he swapped the box anyway.

Has anyone got similar issues? Would love to solve this. I've done a little research and it would appear there are two revisions of SkyQ boxes, and maybe one has this potential fault with certain models of TV, but again I can't verify anything and also, why on earth was it working perfectly before.

Does your Q box connect directly to the TV or pass though another device?

Do you have your own dish - or is it shared in a block of flats or something?

Directly to the tv. Own dish yes. The engineer ran some diagnostics when he was here and everything passed fine, so it suggests the signal from the dish is working perfectly.

Thats super odd then, any common circumstances when the issue kicks in? E.G hard rain hitting the dish?
Do all aspects of the system fail? Or can you still watch on demand (web content) etc?

Nope, no commone circumstances like weather. However, I can sometimes get the Skyq to work if I switch the channel over to say, HDMI 2, or 3. Then back to SkyQ - it may or may not work. Basically I get a blank screen with no signal received otherwise.

(its the hdmi hanshake not a dish/signal problem - the sky box thinks the tv is not there or vice-versa - re-plugging hdfmi causes it to re-acquaint)

did they do a firmware update on sky or your tv ? - near xmas

... would say this kind of problem is not uncommon ... had it on a pc connecting to a pan tv, and a humax box connecting to a sharp tv, often adopting a strict power on sequence fixes it, or re-plugging, flakey hdmi leads/connectors can contribute too

LG OLED 55B6V - Z according to the sticker.

I've just tried swapping the HDMI input around and I've run into the same problem. So it's not related to an individual HDMI socket, or cable.

Yes I believe SkyQ had some sort of update. The interface changed anyway. It does suggest its the hdmi handshake thing you mention.

Hmmmm - not sure where to suggest to look for issues from here with LG TV as I thought Sky were extremely access testing with that brand - have you done the software updates on that TV ever?

I get the same now and again. Very annoying as sometimes a reboot of the box does not fix it either. The last time I had to ring sky and do a forced firmware update on the box, and then it came back.

On one occasion it happened, I saw a message pop up complaining about an hdcp problem. The only reason I can think of is that the cable to the TV (although direct) is 5m long. However, it works 95% of the time, so obviously some glitch in the box's software. They should provide an easy hdmi reset to resolve these issues.

Sky has a long and chequered past with HDMI issues on its boxes. The original Sky HD boxes used to break the HDMI input on Pioneer TVs. Sky said it wasn't their fault. Sky HD boxes had a problem passing audio through Denon AV receivers. Sky said it wasn't their fault. Now there's a 40 page thread on the Sky support forum about the Q box handshake issue.... I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Had zero issues myself.

How long is the HDMI cable you are using?

Seems to be a handshaking issue which with a new box being replaced by the engineer it's either the tv or the cable.

You should maybe try something inbetween the sky box and tv. Like a HDMI booster or splitter? Preferably one that is powered by it's own power supply which is separate.

I have issues with my console going into my soundbar so I use arc instead for instance. Maybe plug into a soundbar before the tv.

Crazy to have an LG oled and not be using proper speakers.

Interestingly I have the same TV and sometimes have this issue with my Sky Q box, usually either switching the AV amp it passes through on and off works, or just switching the Sky box off and back on again gets it to connect (only standby, no switching off at the mains).

I get this issue from time to time - only thing that cures it is a full power off of the sky q box and back on - no amount of turning devices on/off in different order seem to cure it.

Have tried different HDMI cables, have tried every variation of HDMI control being turned on or off on the Sky Q box, AV Receiver and TV, and still occurs.

I have no doubt that it's a firmware issue with the Sky Q box - everything else works fine, but tbh every Sky box I've had over the years has had an issue of some kind (e.g. most of the HD boxes overheating) - they are built to a stupidly low price point.
