Hi there,

First time posting so let me apologise in advance of my post as im sure elements of it will have been covered before but I want to ask about a specific router I have to hand already as a replacement.

I have found that the WIFI in my house drops periodically for some reason and yet my wired connection (PC) seems unaffected. I was wondering if I could repolace my SkyQ hub with a TP link Archer D2 AC750. And would my mini boxes function as normal? Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hard to know what internet setup you have, is it really ADSL or Fibre, if it is adsl that router might work if it supports the right options but I'm assuming you have fibre product from Sky for Q, if so you won't be able to replace Sky hub with that as its the wrong type, also if you get a router it won't work unless it supports DHCP Option 61, so you'd need to be looking into that, also if you are upgrading for better wireless, then wouldn't you want to buy a router with better specced wifi?

Anyway, some ramblings from me, trying to improve my wifi.

If you don't have a router to serve option 61 you have to use your Sky hub, unfortunately you can't put sky hub into modem mode, so you basically have to use it to serve IP to a router and plug everything into new router, dealing with double NAT if you have any servers, hasn't caused me any issues so far running my own cloud and game servers through it and my latency seems fine, so it seems to be a non issue but people always bring it up.

I found Sky Q mini a bit hit and miss on wifi even with Sky boosters, I also found Sky wifi unreliable, so added a mesh wifi router into the mix disabling Sky wifi, the mini Qs did not really like this, the Sky help forums are full of people who are struggling to make anything but Sky hardware work with the minis unless you have a wired connection to them, once meshed the mini Q would claim not to have an internet connection but would still stream live tv from my sky box, so it was definitely on the network and anything else connected to the AP had internet, then sometimes the mini would work perfectly fine, well dodgy.

I fixed mini connectivity by faking a wired connection back to main router with some powerline devices, had no issues since, perhaps if I put a mesh AP on the LAN port of the mini it may also have solved it but happy now have reliable really fast wifi and working Sky Qs.

If you can wire the minis to the same router as main box you will be fine also.

In your specific situation the Sky Q boxes won’t work unless you hard wire them via Ethernet cable.

It might be worth a call to Sky and they can check your Sky Q mesh as this is supposed to improve WiFi coverage as well.

In generally when the issue is WiFi, the solution is going to be access points of some description, Sky will rent you it’s latest and greatest mesh set-up for an arbitrary sum from memory, if that’s your only issue, it may be worth it. Alternatively if your Archer supports AP mode, you could just plug that in and run a cable closer to where you want coverage and see if it improves.
