Ola,

It seems when any kind of speed is pushed thru my sky router it falls over.
Remember seeing recently they started removing the ability to use 3rd party routers.

My Network type shows as MER, can I use a 3rd party router or do I need to hassle sky for a different one?

Cheers

You can connect any 3rd party router with your Sky BB all you need to do is use the special tool to extract your username and password from the sky router and you will then be able to connect via PPPoA instead of MER with which ever router you choose. Id go for a billion 7800n :)

Sky ARE slowly making MER the only connection you can use,my exchange is still mer/ppoa but not all are

Eventually i suppose we are going to have to buy something that supports mer/spoofing of the mac etc
maybe like the Billion 7800N

Even though Sky use MER...they don't actually use MER authentication.

You do not need to spoof the MAC address.

You need to use DHCP option 61. I recommend buying a MaxTerm 8300B and installing PfSense on a compact flash card.

right Im pig sick of this router now.

Anyone got a link to an upto date version of the utility I need to get the required info from the router?

Cheers

Have a look at the TP-LINK TD-8960N
i am using one with my sky and it is cheap and so far reliable
but make sure it is the 8960 and not the 8961

Yeah make sure you don't get the W8961N as it sucks. It wouldn't even hold my short 20 Mbit line stable while an ages old DG834GT never missed a beat.

If you want a cheap solution grab a second hand DG834GT from you know where, it's only wireless G but it's excellent as a modem. I got mine for £10 and use the W8961N as an access point, which it's half decent as.

If not then look for something with a Broadcom chipset and hope you can use PPPoA rather than MER to connect.
