Sky router - Ridiculously slow Wi-Fi speed

Anyone know what may be wrong?

My router shows an approximate 9mb broadband connection but all my wifi devices only seem able to get a connection of about 1-2mb (using speedtest) and they're all snail pace slow at loading anything.

It's the standard crappy Sagem Sky router...

Yep, tried them all!

Now what is crazy, is that if I put my phone NEXT to the router, it gets approx 6mb...

If I put the phone 1.5 meters away on my desk, I then get approx 2mb.

set your router to a new password so none of your wifi devices can connect.

now get the most powerful wi-fi device you own. e.g. a new laptop, or expensive tablet / phone and connect just this one device using the new password and re-run the test.

if this shows near enough full speed. then you have a legacy device slowing down the rest of your devices.

basically say you have 6 devices all of them capable of connecting at high speeds but another device only capable of connecting at 1-5 mbps, this will slow down all the other devices as the router needs to sync everything together.

or it could simply be the router is crap or you have too many devices connected to it or it's not set up properly.

Right, well weirdly my broadband line is not showing as MER currently... (it always has been!) so i've switched over to my Netgear DGND3300 and the wifi performance is loads better. Surprise surprise.

So bearing in mind that Sky might reactivate MER at any time, what can I do about the 2504 being absolutely useless on wifi? Sky will no doubt refuse to upgrade me to a better router without paying...?
