hi guys (and girls!)
i currently have the sky router(netgear rebadged) and was wondering could i buy a gigabit switch to improve speeds or would i need to change the router?
there are only 2 pc's connected via cable and only my laptop that connects to it, only networking between the 3 so not needing fast networking.
really looking to speed up connection to my pc mainly(couldnt care about sisters !!!!)

i know the sky is a pain and doesnt like using any other than their routers but i know it can be done.

any help appreciated.

thanks Ali

What kind of thing are you hoping to speed up? File transfer from one computer to another will improve.

Internet speed will not. How fast is your ADSL line? 5Mb, maybe 10 at a push. Your current wired connection is 100Mb. If you are upgrading for increase internet speeds i doubt you will see any performance change.

thats a shame, currently get about 10/11Mb at a push, i was hoping to somehow improve internet speeds!!!
rarely file transfer accept when syncing my music. just ocassional watch film over network of pc onto lappy.

so the only way really to improve speed is change isp or get bt to prove the lines !!!!! haha can see that happening!!!

10Mb is good for an ADSL line, there are a coouple of little things you can do to squeeze the connection but generally you wont see a huge improvement.

Changing ISP wont necessarily improve your speed as the physical conditions of the phone line wont change.

correct - 10mb on sky is very good - probably paying a £10 a month for 10mb download speeds is excellent value for money. What more speed do you want?

I've got my Sky Netgear router connected to a 3Com gigabit switch. All wired connections are made to the 3Com with a single connection made to the Netgear.

I've only got things setup as above to get the benefit of faster internal transfers between those PC's with gigabit Ethernet ports. Apart from that there is no other benefit (apart from taking some of the switching work away from the router).
