Sky Router

Sky don't have an N Router as yet, no. One is in testing to be released in the next few months apparently.

Sky 'say' you can't use one, but I was advised if you can, and they won't help you with settings, usernames etc then they won't stop you, they just won't support you.

Sky are also changing to MER/IPoE which uses MAC addresses to authenticate on their servers so I'm not sure how much longer you'll get away with a non sky Router.

I don't think I've ever had a router that hasn't supported MAC address cloning.

I'm with sky and the supplied Dlink router was recently upgraded to the new firmware and now say connected using MER. I still use my own router (Billion 7800) with out issues. spoke with support recently and said do you want me to put my your router on the line or can I leave mine, they just said it would be fine with my own router :D

Got Sky recently and it's a sagem and connected to MER. I guess if you can get your Sky details out from the supplied router you can use your own....

Greetings folks,

My understanding is that the Sky N router "MIGHT" go on sale from Aug 1st
Not sure what they mean by "Sale" if it will be an option to customers or not.

the issue with sky is they will refuse to tell you the username and password! I managed to lie about some stuff and get a username / password off them before and the router worked fine wuithout messing with macs

Replaced my crappy sky router with a Billion 7800N and its been great. I can now download and play online at the same time without lag, gained 1mb of extra download speed and have better WIFI coverage. Sweeet! :)

If Sky were to try and stop me from using my own router i would change ISP TBH.

Nice to see you are all sorted dude,
I have a number of routers here on my o2 line and its great seeing how routers change the sync speed.

I flashed a old netgear with DG team firmware and at this point got a sync speed of 23meg max of 24 with snr of 1.7 been up for 7 hours with only a few crc errors.

But for wireless thoughput best router i used was an old BT homehub 2.0 linked to the standard o2 wireless box,
On a 20 meg sync got wireless speeds of 17+ :)

From what ive read the new sky router (sagemcom) is wireless n but has a transfer rate of
71mbps, which is due to be fixed with a firmware upgrade soon, i read this on skyusers forums
if my memory is correct, ill try to find it again.

I'd still be using my own 3rd party router, and keep the sky one if you ever have line issues.
they wont help with a non sky router at all.

The Sagecom router is not the one that Sky class as wireless N,
Also the sagecom router has only just had a firmware update about a month ago to fix intermittent connections.

This was caused by the wireless chipset over heating and crashing the router.

There's a new Sagemcom Router coming which is the N. Nice Sky man told me about it when i phoned them up for a TV related issue and asked him when the N router is being released.
