Hi guys
Hope this is the right section. Basically I'm trying to assign a static IP to my laptop using the IP reservation function in the router settings. Once I've reserved an IP for it outside the range that other devices have their's assigned from do I need to manually input the information on the network connection properties box (vista), or can I leave the setting on "obtain an IP address automatically" because it will always be assigned the same one? I'm doing this so I can use port forwarding.
Thanks for the help.

Erm, if you're doing a reservation there's several ways to do it.
A. Just manually set an IP on the network adapter that is outside the DHCP scope. Sorted.
B. Create a static resservation in DHCP, by entering the MAC address of the network adapter in the table under DHCP server settings, give it an IP Within the DHCP scope and leave the network adapter set to obtain automatically.
C. Create an Exclusion in the DHCP settings that is an IP within the DHCP scope that will never be assigned by the server. Then manually configure the address on the network adaptor.

All are perfectly valid methods, but for home users i'd recommend B. Purely because A and C will require maintaining documentation of what IP belongs to what device to prevent conflicts in the future. A gives you the MAC of the device and the IP it will assign to it clearly shown in the config, thus sort of doing the documentation for you. And if all devices on the network are set to obtain addresses automatically it's almost impossible to get an IP conflict.
