Finally, a dedicated ch to European football.

"It will become the home of European Championship qualifiers, Champions League action, Spain's La Liga and the Copa del Rey and other European football shows such as Revista De La Liga and Champions League Weekly."

Sky Sports have announced the launch of a new channel today – their first dedicated to European Football.

Known as Sky Sports 5, it is the sports broadcasting giants’ first new channel since Sky Sports F1 arrived in March 2012.

But what exactly will the new platform offer viewers?

- What will it show?

Up to 600 live European football matches including Champions League, La Liga, Copa del Rey, Uefa Euro qualifiers and Dutch Eredivisie games.

The Dutch league is the only major addition here, with Sky Sports agreeing a new four-year deal to show matches featuring the likes of Ajax and Feyenoord. The other competitions have already been shown regularly on Sky Sports.

- When will it launch?

August 12 – just in time for the start of the European domestic seasons. La Liga starts on August 23 and Champions League play-offs begin on August 19.

- How do I get it?

The channel will be free for existing Sky Sports customers, who will be able to register for it from June 12 via their website, over the phone or using the red button.

The broadcasters have even thrown in the added incentive of a two-year free broadband deal for customers that do so.

It will also be available on Virgin Media but other TV platforms are yet to be confirmed.

- Why are they launching it?

With BT Sport having emerged as major football broadcasting rivals since their launch last summer, Sky Sports know they need something different.

Italian, French and German football is shown regularly on BT Sport, who will also take the Champions League away from Sky in 2015, meaning the new channel will only boast Europe’s premier competition for one season.

While Spanish football is a very attractive property, it remains to be seen whether the Dutch league will be a major draw when compared to BT’s offerings.
