Sky Sports News, Holocaust comment. Does it offend you?

It doesn't offend me, nor, I imagine, the vast majority of football fans. But colourful terms like 'rape', 'holocaust' and 'hanging-out-the-back-of-her' go against SKY's mission to sanitise, gentrify and commercialise the sport and therefore they must be seen to take the moral high ground, however hypocritical it maybe.

I'm fairly certain that a fair portion of women object to the word "rape" being used so lightly, actually.

It doesn't offend me, and I found the use of the term more amusingly stupid than hurtful, but regardless, it's a pretty terrible choice of metaphor.

There's no such thing as rape. It's surprise sex.

I'm offended by seeing Tony Cascarino on tv. Does that count?

:D

I remember his comment about taking three goalkeepers to the World Cup!

Said England should only take two, despite FIFA rules saying you have to take three ;)

This.

But his comment? It's a nothing comment but as usual the press need to make a story and if they can find a suitable sad looking person (preferably a woman or someone disabled) to stick on their paper next to their comment they will love it as it will sell some papers.

a little cringe worthy, made awkward by the presenter because even as she apologised for him he had no idea what he did by the sounds of it. :o

This is the first I've heard of it, so clearly the media hasn't got in a big hoo-ha about it. In fact it's the first time I've ever heard anyone use that phrase "Having a holocaust".

Personally I don't think a phrase like that should be used, after the whole Gray/Keys fiasco Sky will be looking to clamp down on anything that isn't politically correct. The holocaust rightly or wrongly is a bit of a taboo area, there's no need to bring it up, you could say "having a nightmare" or whatever instead.

When I was at secondary school and there was a massive bundle sometimes people would cry "Hillsbrough!", looking back now that was pretty lame, this was early 90s so had our school been a couple of hundred miles further North the chances are we could have offended somebody quite severely. We weren't deliberately looking to offend people or even trying to be particularly funny (unlike say Rodney Marsh's joke about the 'Toon Army' being big in Asia) it was just something people did, but that doesn't mean it was acceptable.

Holocaust doesnt bother me. Its not like it exclusive to talking about WW2 or any other mass killing. From one website.

Usage Note: Holocaust has a secure place in the language when it refers to the massive destruction of humans by other humans

That is fairly apt when talking about that game.

Though I can understand why Sky wouldnt be happy just because some people WILL be offended by it. Clarkson said a car was "a bit gay" and got similar complaints.

None that i've met. Almost all are against ANY usage of the evil C word. Baffles me since they are fine with the P word, and the V word, clunge, etc.

^My wife got a bit annoyed when she overheard me saying "help at bridge, I'm getting raped!" while playing an online game :)

words are just things people have made up, anyone can make something up and give it meaning, that is why the don't bother me in the slightest, i think they should use more phrases like this in day to day life. i for one would love to be able to tell people that the damage done was holocaust-esque it would make my day a little bit more bearable

Just goes to show that some of these commentators have no control on what comes out of their mouths.
