As the titel really. I've bought a BT Openreach modem and Asus router and expected them to work together (noob alert!). Had anyone had experience of setting up a different router to work with sky non fibre broadband?

I'm a bit stuck!

Thank you for any and all suggestions :)

What work around?

If you're just wanting better wireless you can use the N66U as a wireless access point. Leave the SR102 connected with its wireless disabled. Connect the N66U to the SR102 and select AP mode and you'll be good to go.

The speed of our Internet has taken a hit since using sky, so was hoping to use it as the main router. It's a work around which let's you get the user and password for sky and using custom firmware to allow it.

The actual speed or just the speed you're seeing over wireless? Test using a cabled connection if there's any doubt.

If you're wanting to replace the SR102 for an ADSL connection then the RT-N66U isn't a good starting point.

You really want something with an internal ADSL modem. You also need to check that it'll work on a Sky connection. If they're still using their version of MER then your choice is a bit limited.

If you purchased the HG612 it's ADSL/ADSL2/VDSL, update the firmware to the generic (non BT) version and it'll do what you need, if you purchased an ECI (which it looks like you did) then you're stuck with fiber only.

Gah, thanks for the help. How much do the hg612 go for normally?

So doing what you mentioned above would allow me to use the Asus as the only router?

You should be able to get hold of a used HG612 for about £20.

If the actual connection is slow then there's no good reason why a HG612 would improve it compared to the SR102. If it is significantly slower with Sky and the SR102 than it was with your previous ISP then get it investigated.

If it's just a wireless issue you may as well use the N66U as an AP. It's simple to setup and guaranteed to work. I'm not convinced that even with a HG612 you'll get it working directly as a router.

The Asus and ECI should work together for Sky fibre. You might need custom firmware on the Asus but that's easy to do.

Even with fibre you could use the SR102 with the Asus as an AP.
