Sky to save customers money - Standby issue

The EC is going to pass legislation that all new electronic products have their standby function removed. (Including PCs, TVs etc.)

This doesn't make any sense as if I can't hibernate my PC I'll just leave it running :o

So what's the big deal? My Humax freeview recorder automatically sets itself to standby already plus *I* get to choose the time at which it turns itself off.

Wahey. Every little helps. Actually hard to believe many companies are doing their little bit for the environment.

I just hope it doesn't interfear with recordings on Sky+....

I really don't want this software update to be honest, I don't see the point, our Sky+ box is always put into standby when we go to sleep,

hibernate is different from standby and is exactly what they want you to do
it powers down completely and just takes a snapshot of the current running state of the system and restores it to that

Would this not get highly annoying if your watching a late night film/sport from another country?

Article in OP said:
Auto Standby will monitor whether people are using their Sky+ or Sky HD box(es) overnight between 11pm and 4am. If the box hasn't been used for a period of two hours after 11pm an 'Auto Standby' warning will flash up on screen for three minutes. If there is no further use the box goes into Standby mode automatically.

but watching a film wouldnt neccessarily register as activity because you're not changing channel etc
so the message would pop up mid film

I hope there is an option to disable it.

We have our sky box going through all the tv aerials so we can watch it upstairs. I don't want to have run downstairs every 2 hours when watching late night telly.

What purpose does hibernation serve for you? Surely it's just impatient mans shutdown with your PC being arguably less secure as a result.

Good invention! About time too.
